For a tiny apartment an L-shaped breakfast nook set can easily carve a DIY dining area out of a kitchen or even a living room. Try putting moulding on the ceiling to outline the ceiling above, with a small swag lamp over the table for a "custom look". You can then paint or panel the banquette ceiling to more emphatically define the area. If no window, put a tromp'de oeil mirror on the wall to suggest one.

I have been designing banquets based on this diagram, & clients have been happy. The total depth would be 22" including 4" for the backrest.
