We used cedar lumber for frame and galvanized wire panels for inserts. These panels can be found at farm & ranch supply stores. They come in various sizes, for example 42" x 96" and they can be cut to your required size. They are held in place by cedar trim pieces. The top handrail is a 2x 6 cedar piece, run through a table saw so the top is slightly slanted to roll off rainwater....The wire panels are sometimes called "cattle panels" or "hog panels." They come in different grid sizes. The grid I used was 4 x 6" -- to attach the cattle panel to the trim? First we anchored the edges of the panels to the 2x4 cedar frame, then we trimmed with 2" x 2" cedar on both sides of the panel, all the way around
"Many types of artistic panels — mostly made from metal — can be custom built and attached to an existing drab wall. The panels come in different designs and textures and attach directly to the wall as decorative elements. The Cor-Ten steel panels pictured here work well because they have a high contrast against the existing wall and are sized to fit the space."
"Place elements in front of the wall, as has been done here with bamboo planting and a protruding white textured accent panel. A panel like this is a simple site wall that acts as an architectural element within a small space and is flanked by vertical plantings. A panel like this can be a free-floating structure that doesn’t touch or build upon the existing wall. It’s a handy way to completely screen a wall that is not on your property."
Choose a color for nighttime viewing. If you enjoy using your outdoor living space primarily in the evening, choose a hue that's visible in low light. White, silver, yellow and light pastels are the easiest colors for the human eye to see at dusk. Pale, smooth hardscape surfaces reflect light and are safer to use. Light flowers or variegated foliage in the garden will add depth to the landscape. Enjoy darker, richer hues as accents.
"Architecture overhead. Another way to draw the eye away from the sides is to draw it up. Arbors, pergolas, vines, lighting — all these features will have people looking up. Architecture overhead can enhance a narrow space by defining it. The journey through it is more compressed, so the drama of the backyard opening up at the end of the procession is all the greater."
"Like so many family gardens it is important to have the open lawn area for ball games and family fun. But rather than being a boring slab of green, make it a feature, that's the key to this garden. The lawn is defined by a strong edge, enabling easy maintenance and its shape allows for deeper garden beds, which provides room for a broader range of planting. The hot wall allows for fruiting espalier and the paved zone gives easy access and room for family and friends to get together. This garden offers all year round interest, but not all year maintenance."
