I moved to a much smaller house two months ago and was thinking about shelves across my kitchen and dining room windows and then changed my mind but after reading this, I saved a few photos. I may just do it! Great for plants to liven up our PNW winters and still let the light in. I haven't put any window covers up at in those two windows so I'm excited to think more about it.

No-one ever talks here about these hand-vacuum window wash-water suckers (don'want to mention any brand names). I use one. It is fantastic. My wife thinks it's just a toy-for-boyz, but as long as I do the windows she says nothing ... but she absolutely refuses to even try it. Get the window nice and wet with a fluffy roller soaked in water, suck off by machine, and one sheet of kitchen roll paper gets the last drops off (one small sheet does 2 windows). In between I use a fluffy dust cloth for inside and outside, so we only need to do the windows every 6 weeks.

Karen I agree about shelves. I notice that Americans tend to have many more bits and bobs around their homes, unlike the more sterile Central / Northern European homes. In my home country of Britain, my mum had lots of gubbings around the house. Here in Germany we have got rid of tonnes of extraneous clutter. I makes for less work. But I agree, shelves attached to a window would drive me absolutely bonkers. I believe a window is to let light in and to look out of. Not to mention the cleaning hassle.
