my clutter is books and papers, journals and letters, collection of stamps I got with a bunch of books at a flea market sale that I'm going to investigate, Books that I am going to read, or am not sure I did read. A few stuffed animals, that were the kids, small ones, mostly sit on bookshelves. A few photos I "shared" a bunch with the wives of my 4 married sons, of when their hubbies were kids. And just plain out through a lot of them away. Do I really need 50 photos of my 50 year old son in kindergarten? If I didn't know who the photo was of? threw it out. Question? will someone want this when I'm gone and they're digging through stuff. No? throw.

one more thing that I do not need any more? dishes, bowls, and kitchen stuff. Got to really work up my courage to let that go.

Very helpful article, Laura. Thank you. I think what we have to focus on is your point in #9. That we have made room in our closet and our heart for the future. When we downsize, are we actively moving onwards and upwards? I've had family items in storage on the other side of the country since 2009, with a major cull completed 2 years ago. Since then, I have reflected on the consolidated items from afar and have come up with ways to upcycle a few treasured pieces representing two generations. I have had to play out the scenario in my mind where the garage door is lifted and I only have 15 minutes to retrieve what is most dear to me. That helps.... or if I won the lottery and could travel the world in a combi van for the rest of my life's journey, what would I want to take with me?
