The Not So Big Space

Little is the new big. While I enjoy checking out sweeping vistas and expansive palaces as much as the next person, the truth is that most of us actually live in fairly small spaces – and that’s all we really need.

In the 10 years since architect Sarah Susanka published her ode to small-scale living, The Not So Big House, a lot of big houses have been built, but a lot of homeowners have also chosen to downsize, and many renovators have taken steps to make their home more livable, instead of just larger.

Here are some small spaces that I love for their efficient (and cool) design:

I love the use of windows to open up what could become a claustrophobic stairway. A simple walkway, tree and planter bring the outside in, complementing the natural wood of the steps.

Spiral staircases are dramatic and beautiful. They're also amazingly space-saving. Taking up a fraction of a traditional staircase, they're a fantastic solution for a home that's tall, but narrow.

This home in the city is wedged between two other houses, but the addition of a rooftop living space makes it feel as open as if it were in the country. Glass walls open to a roof deck, creating an amazing space to entertain without expanding the footprint.

In direct contrast to the subtle colors in the room above, I think that it's the bright colors here that really make the room work. It's fun and energetic and despite the variety of colors, everything feels tied together.

Especially in older homes, bedrooms are often tight. This room attractively and efficiently delivers. A friendly, approachable color scheme carried through furniture and fabrics works well with smaller scale furniture - big pieces would overwhelm the space.

Bathrooms frequently present design problems. They're usuall very small, but they require careful design thanks to plumbing needs. Everything fits perfectly in this space, and the clear shower door makes the whole place feel a little roomier.

This dining space may be small, but it is lovely and dramatic. Floor to ceiling windows lend the space an airy feel and the use of a picnic-style table with benches, instead of a traditional table, streamlines the design and saves space.

The piano is absolutely my favorite thing about this small space. Just because a room is short on square footage doesn't mean you have to give up all your hobbies. These owners made the piano a priority and a centerpiece - and it works.

Kitchen size is a big complaint of many owners of older homes and apartment dwellers - but it doesn't have to be. Sure, a galley kitchen will never offer as much storage as a 500 square foot McMansion pantry, but smart, user-focused design can make the smallest kitchen efficient and beautiful. I love the wood and stainless here, and I know it would be simple to prep food just between the sink and stove, while guests hang out at the table and chat.

This space is another great example of how a small space can be a perfect home office. The loft offers some privacy from the rest of the living area and a built-in desk and shelves make otherwise dead space useful.

This tiny home office nook makes the most of an oddly-shaped corner. The walls are dramatic and cool while the built-in desk and shelves are pure function.
