“The windows were extremely leaky and let in outside air constantly. They were all replaced.” says Liz. The home’s original wood floors were refinished and brought back to their original beauty. The ceiling wood beams were also added in to create more architectural interest and charm.
Liz’s artwork is showcased throughout the the home, as seen in the home’s living room.
The entryway showcases a large foyer with entry ways to both, the living room and the parlor room or family room.
The stairs were raised and the steps replaced. Carefully placed art is seen along the staircase to add interest to the otherwise blank space. All chandelier medallions were added in to create more architectural interest and charm. Liz painted the portrait of one of her sons (which son?).
A downstairs powder room was retrofitted with wainscoting, new sink, toilet and floors. Stenciling was added to the walls for added interest.
The family room sits at the front of the house directly off of the foyer. A wall separating the sitting area from the kitchen was torn down to create a more open space, ideal for entertaining.
The sitting room, formerly a breakfast room, maintains its original purpose with a dining nook.
“The kitchen island is original to the home. It was given a facelift with a coat of paint and a new butcher block top,” says Liz. Light fixtures and additional cabinetry was added by the couple. Some of the original cabinets were painted white, while new countertops were added. Wood ceiling beams were added to add warmth to the space.
Additional seating is incorporated inside the kitchen to accommodate additional guests during get togethers or to sit down for a simple family meal.
“We added dutch doors to the back sitting room, which used to be the ‘maid’s quarters’ in the original home” shares Liz. “The dogs hang out there now and we wanted them to not feel closed in and be able to hear us in the kitchen” she adds. A chalkboard writing area is added to the space for a fun twist.
The back sitting room, located behind the kitchen, is a quiet area for the family to sit. “We re-did the ceilings and replaced the doors and windows. “This room used to be a home gym,” says Liz.
The master bedroom is elegantly filled with a mixture of blue and golds with pops of red. All fixtures and floors were added to the space during the home’s renovation. Quinn’s room is a mature space filled with dark, rich, warm colors. “The boys told me what types of things they wanted in their rooms and I took care of designing it and putting it all together,” says Liz.
Liam’s room is a stark contrast to his twin brother’s. Its cool blues gives it a beach feel. “Liam likes fishing and surfing,” adds Liz. The wainscoting was added to the bedroom for a cottage style.Wall paint: custom; All furnishings, area rugs, light fixtures and decor items: Liz Murtagh Boutique

Low VOC custom paint was used throughout the house. On the other side of the home office is a music area. “We regularly have large get togethers where we will sometimes have a piano player come in for entertainment,” says Liz. “We oftentimes entertain friends with barbecues in the backyard area. We also host holiday parties where we will have Santa visit and artificial snow delivered. It’s just magical,” says Liz.
Liz designed the pool and grass infused deck that was added to the landscaping. The canopies above the pool provide much needed shade from the Florida sun.
A dock was added by the couple to enjoy the mild, tropical weather.
The front of the home is ensconced by palm trees and luscious greenery for a welcoming feel.
“Our home is all about family and friends. It’s normally filled with half a dozen kids hanging out and having sleepovers,” says Liz, pictured with her twin sons, Quinn, left, and Liam.See more photos of this homeMy Houzz is a series in which we visit and photograph creative, personality-filled homes and the people who inhabit them.
