I'd like to hear from parents who've put a blackboard wall of some kind in their kids' rooms. Is it always a mess? I'd love to do one for my boys but, quite frankly, don't want to deal with colored dust on the floor all the time. Any solutions for that?

Anything fixed will become boring quickly. We have a separate board which we take out every so often, and thus is much more fun.
