Architects Rule designed the dream home our clients asked for – a space to serve as a sanctuary from workday stress as well as place to entertain friends and family. The aim was to maximize available living space and light to create a spacious family home while embracing a modern aesthetic The outcome of that intention is realized: A handsome, Modernist-style,two-story corner house (currently under construction). Just shy of 4,000 square feet, a square U of living space and bedrooms around a central courtyard invites the outdoors in and the cement-and-cedar façade, pierced by an assemblage of rectilinear windows of various sizes, opens views and takes full advantage of sunlight.
Considerations were made for the neighborhood, which is an affluent upper-middle-class neighborhood in Queens (a borough of New York City) that usually features traditional “ye olde” residential style. We wanted something that would inspire the community and integrate well within the environment. Our solution was to embrace organic, modern design in a neighborhood more familiar with rows of mock Tudor and Colonial houses. But we believe the organic integrity of materials (cedar cladding, polished concrete walls and floor, etc.) strikes a warm, modern note in a neighborhood desperate for contemporary design that reflects the way we live now.
