Room of the Day: Master Suite Recalls Hollywood’s Glamour Days
Silver-screen styling finds it way north to a Hollywood Regency-inspired bedroom in Toronto

The Hollywood Regency style originated in the golden age of Hollywood — the 1930s. Taking inspiration from the lavish film sets of the period that blended neoclassical and modern design, actor-turned-designer William “Billy” Haines is often considered the founder of the style. Today its legacy appears in many interiors throughout the Los Angeles area. Designer Kimberley Seldon, a native Angeleno, says that the region’s aesthetic influences have never left her. A bedroom’s original fireplace mantel with period-perfect details provided all the encouragement she needed to create a fresh take on the past.

Removing the wall separating the master bedroom from the master bath created one bright and airy master suite. “The house is located along a ravine, so privacy was not a concern,” says Seldon. Two floor-to-ceiling screens constructed from MDF and given a Hollywood Regency-inspired design create distinction between the areas.

A trio of mirrored pendant lights from a vintage shop in Toronto runs the length of the master suite. The wood floors were painted gray using an effect that makes them appear to be stone. The bed and screen float in the center of the room, with windows on three sides and a fireplace at the opposite end. “Floating the bed allowed enough space to create a cozy seating area around the fireplace,” says Seldon. “It also allows for sweeping views in all directions when lying in bed.”

While the room consists of many shades of oyster and gray, Seldon wanted lavender bedding and fabrics to create a pop. “I didn’t want the lavender to be sweet or childlike,” she says. “I wanted a mature hue that was elegant and sophisticated.”

Four custom tufted ottomans in various heights and lengths create a centerpiece in the bath area. “I envisioned it as a wonderful spot to unwind before taking a soak in the tub or to throw on some nail polish before a night out on the town,” says Seldon.
