Before and after. We did most the work ourselves and hired the subcontractors for project we could not do. Be very careful doing plumbing or electrical, because in the case of a flood or fire, insurance will not cover it if you did not have a professional do the work. Do your homework, take your time, don't let contractors or designers manipulate what you really want. Make a pac with your mate to only talk to one another in a nice inside voice.... it can be a bit trying. Ohhh and set up a mini kitchen for cooking and doing dishes ahead of time, this will be a small blessing in the end.

Good article, interesting comments, but it would be soooo much more helpful if you had categorized the costs by square feet (or meter for non-us folks). For example, moderate, smaller kitchens @ $X per sq.'; high-end, smaller kitchens at $Y per sq.'; High-end, larger kitchens @ $Z per...etc. Also bath estimates needed!!!

This article is probably more helpful for contractors than homeowners with the payment info and decision-making issues by age groups.

I've been researching costs for bath and porch addition and it is VERY hard to get decent estimates. As the estimates are coming in, I feel like I've wasted quite a bit of planning time because - gee, I believed pricing stuff I read on the internet - LOL! Now I'm going to have to figure if I need to scale back or save more money.

Even a clear range of square foot costs could have helped me be more realistic up front.

Thank you - in a future publication on this topic, it'd be helpful to have a regional break-down for average remodel costs. My guess is that Bay Area, CA may skew materially higher due to higher labor costs here for contract work. I would like to understand my region specifically as I'm considering remodeling several areas of our home.
