detailaddict, thank you for taking the time to respond. I'm all for salvaging the past but on second look, we've decided to replace the very old cupboards and counter. I'm definitely going for two-toned cupboards but not sure I'm brave enough for red bottoms--red accents and nautical touches for sure. I found an old oar, wrapped some marine rope around it and hung it beneath the bar. Dresses up what is usually an empty space, provides a design moment, is subtle and restful. Love it!

I live in a home built in 1920 and I have a small
kitchen. When I had my kitchen renovated
last summer, I utilized every possible inch that I had to work with because
tearing down a wall was out of the question.
And I did go with a 2-tone for my kitchen cabinets. I kept the base for the cupboards and had new
doors made, never was so happy than to get rid of the doors that was there
beforehand. Ugh! The top is cottage cream and the bottom is
antiquity, both by Sherwin Williams. The
cottage cream is also the color I used thru out the kitchen, was the best
choice I made and was the hardest decision was finding just the right
color. And the best way I can explain
the bottom color, it looks like split pea soup.
I have in my living room the color mossy rock green by Behr and I wanted
my first floor to blend in, and it does.
And yes I have a tendency to lean towards earth tones with my color
choices; but I did add red as my accent color, a splash from the past, the
1950's look. You make your home who you
are, and you will always be in love with your home, I know I do...
