As the weather starts to turn chilly and cool, it's time to nestle in and bring out warm, soothing autumn-colored decorations. Pinecones, leaves and pumpkins have long been a part of Thanksgiving; now acorns are starting to make up ground as a popular and conveniently free alternative for tabletops and mantels. Check out these DIY ideas and ready-made picks that incorporate this easy-to-find nut.

Tip: Before bringing acorns inside, it's a good idea to clean them thoroughly to be sure you're not bringing in any bugs. Simply rinse the acorns in a bowl and gently scrub them with a soft brush. Check for holes in the shells and toss any that look suspicious. Allow them to air dry thoroughly. Optional: After washing the acorns, bake them on a foil-lined cookie sheet at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes.
