Make sure that as part of the prep work all areas are checked for water infiltration. Water is the enemy and it is crucial that flashings and areas where different building materials meet do not allow moisture to get behind or between these areas. This preventative maintenance will prevent expensive repairs later.

For my client's home in San Francisco, the painting contractor was instrumental in offering to paint the raised original detail fleurs in a couple different color options, which lead us to the best combination shown in this after photo. By totally painting out the street level with garage doors, the eye is drawn upward to the appreciate the upper 3 levels.

As you can see, this is quite a departure from the previous 1980's color palette in the Before photo below, where the garage doors became the major focus.

Working with a painting contractor who is willing to provide several mock-ups, and as long as the decision maker is on site, these can be quick decisions which don't delay the overall schedule and you end up with a much more personalized color palette.

I like how simply you described the benefits of working with a professional painter — the job will be done more efficiently and accurately by someone with more knowledge. Along with what you said about making sure the contractor you hire is licensed and insured, I think it's important that you get a copy of their license and insurance agreement before they begin. I know I would feel much better if I actually had a physical copy of those documents before any work was done.
