I want to turn our backyard into meadow by planting wildflowers (native of course) along the tree line and hopefully having them spread out over time. Obviously I would prefer pretty aggressive plants and I’m curious if Joe Pye Weed can spread out pretty quickly? I have some rudbeckia I can also start out there but I want something that blooms early as well so I can have succession of blooms through growing season. Any recommendations?

Kelly -- No, joe pye will not be aggressive for you. If you'd like a more specific, highly tailored consult that will give you the best chance for success I'd encourage you to work with me online at https://www.monarchgard.com/consulting.html

I like purple coneflowers Echinacea purpurea and Monarda fistulosa (bee balm, wild bergamont, horse mint). Both have done well for me in sun and shade, and both spread at a reasonable rate. See photos on my site here.
