Here is a combination of a few elements: 1. Both shorter and taller upper cabinets 2. raised bartop 3. clear glass for a more open effect. I think the clear glass approach for your situation is risky because you need to hide lots of stuff in those upper cabinets and it may not be very attractive. These cabinets are filled with expensive crystal stemware and therefore not very functional for everyday storage uses.
See how open this pass through is? I like the raised bar top. Also, note the short height of the upper cabinets over the peninsula/bartop. Unfortunately, I think we should keep to this shorter height to maximize the open feel. This means a little less upper cabinet storage space, but you will be gaining a lot more storage from the array along the wall adjacent to the living room that we are adding.
