Outsides were in on Houzz this past year, as readers remarked on all kinds of home exterior details that stood out
Although many of these homes lean toward traditional style, Houzz readers saved these photos for all the little details that look great on any home. Houzzers noted the stonework, shutters, exterior lighting, shingles and outdoor fireplaces, gathering inspiration for their own homes.

2. Traditional shutters in Ohio. While the lanterns and shutters immediately catch the eye, several readers noted the simple stone steps leading off the doors.
4. Simple shingled exterior in Minnesota. Sturdy shingles adorn this exterior, offsetting the dark wood front doors. The covered porch makes for a welcoming entrance, sheltering visitors from rain, sun or snow.
5. Year-round fire pit in Minnesota. This cabin-style home is suited for year-round entertaining. A covered porch, an expansive lawn and a fire pit can be used whether there's sun or snow. Many readers saved this photo for the beautiful stonework in the fire pit area.
6. Modern back patio in Austin. A more modern take on a mountain residence, this rustic Texas home integrates bold elements to give it a unique twist. Readers especially loved the modern fireplace on the covered patio.
7. Spanish-style breezeway in California. Several types of stone and dark wood columns add to the ambience of this ranch's breezeway. All of the iron accents — lanterns, sconces, wall decor — tie each part of this open space together.
8. Outdoor fireplace in Illinois. This home takes advantage of an existing chimney with a unique outdoor fireplace. Houzzers also noted the gray and white palette and the back steps with handrails.
9. Lake O'Brien wooded retreat. This Minnesota woodland home has the perfect outdoor setup for a summer cabin. The bursts of red in the outdoor furniture contrast with the green in the exterior as well as with the lush, green surroundings.
10. Parisian style in the heart of Dallas. Inspired by classic French manors, this elegant home is actually in Texas. The straightforward landscaping draws the eye straight to the stately cast-stone facade.
