Great article - to put a finer point on it...and to get that perfect ratio every time - use Phi! The golden ratio. It occurs everywhere in nature and is always pleasing to the human eye. This will calculate the perfect mat/frame size based on print/canvas size: http://erikras.com/2010/01/07/optimizing-picture-to-border-ratio/
