Like Bev, I am a quilter, which influences my decorating. In most rooms, I chose two major colors, then play with a range of depths of those two colors, or bring in several more minor colors at the same color depth.

Two examples: My living room uses classic navy and gold/caramel, but I have a stunning oriental rug on the floor which also includes burgundy, hunter green, medium brown, and creme. The wood tones of my furniture are cherry/mahogany and I have medium oak floors, white painted woodwork, and light creamy yellow walls. Traditional style, obviously.

I'm in the middle of a master suite reno that uses shades of surf/teal and tan/chocolate brown with brass hardware in the bath and on furniture pulls, again with dark woods and medium oak floors. This time, I am using just those two colors, along with white and creme, but mixing shades of lights and darks, as a quilter would. The effect combines high-end hotel chic with beach spa tranquillity, a perfect combination for a bedroom and bathroom, I think.
