Loft Conversion

I adore dormers - have done since I was a child in the 1960s! Interesting, though, what people have said about poor ventilation ... my current loft conversion (done before I moved in) has velux windows - pretty on the inside but rather hideous on the outside. Also, the conversion gave rise to a flat roof - horrible and prone to leaks.

I have experience 100's of loft conversions throughout my career, all seemed either too hot or too cold and never like the remaining house.

So, when I bought a bungalow 4 years ago with the sole intention of converting the space and creating a large dormer I was very nervous about the end living result. I am convinced that few builders realise the value of insulation that is installed correctly.

On my project I used 5" studs with 120mm Celotex between, cut the Celotex panels tight as possible to the stud frames and then over laid with 50mm Celotex to stop cold bridging with ALL joints taped with ali tape, then battens then plasterboard.

The end result is magic, every morning I wake up feeling the upstairs space feels no different to that in a normal house, which is how it is supposed to be.

I make a very clear point on my drawings that builders must cut panels tight and ali tape - whether they do that is another matter - but I know it works.

Nice article :o)
