@n247080 -

"Who on earth would waste a room with such amazing views dedicated to exercise?"

Every room in my house has an amazing view (well, except for the laundry room, I guess), including the basement, where my gym is.

"Most of us, in the real world, would find ourselves using these pieces of equipment for drying or clothes......or hanging laundry.... HEEEEE!"

Yes, most of "us" (not me, you?) are obese.

"Seriously, how much exercising are you really going to do and why wouldn't you opt for simple things like walking, hiking and running?"

It is currently 22 degrees F outside.

"The sooner you get the work done, the sooner you can return to normal life."

This *is* a part of my normal life.

I'm amazed at the number of critical comments here about having a home gym. Who cares if someone wants a home gym? I work out with kettlebells, free weights and do yoga at home to complement my hiking, kayaking, skiing and biking. I would never go to a gym. I would love to have the room to have even a small gym. What I don't understand is the criticism of having a gym to work out. I never click on the articles entitled " The Best Man Caves", or "Remarkable Basement Remodels", or anything having to do with outdoor kitchens. None of those rooms/areas interest me. They would all be a waste of money for me but if they fit your lifestyle, go for it.

My son has Developmental Coordination Disorder. It is very similar to mild Cerebral Palsy but it is non degenerative and can get better. We did 12 years of therapy where I drove and spent $150-$200 an hour. I signed him up for fitness classes but he was always so embarrassed. Last year I put a few pieces of old gym equipment in my basement for my now 22 year old son to try with a trainer. Low and behold.... What Change transpired!!! It was the BEST thing I have ever done! And... he actually LOVES it. The trainer worked with him to a point where he now also works out in a commercial gym but still meets with his trainer who he has really bonded with. His body has transformed. I know that gym workouts really help kids with ADHD as well. So a home gym can be a remarkeable place! I am looking for ideas as my son uses the gym 2 times a week but I want an entertainment space. It will be cramped so I'm looking for ideas and trying to figure out how to plan my home gym. Because... we cannot live without it. (My son lives with buddies but comes home to workout! LOL) I am sure that I have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars I never really had on crappy therapy but the gym/the trainer/and my son.... well, this DID work.... at a fraction of the cost!
