I had a hard time decorating my bland little box house until I came upon the idea of themes. Been at it for almost 40 years! Each room or section has its own theme. I love it because it's fun & makes me happy. My tiny bathrooms are a beach house & fishing cabin. All done with stuff we had collected that was meaningful to us. (We fish & go to the beach.) You can't do much with a tiny bathroom so I made it interesting. Themes also help me to stick to the right colors & accessories since I am decorating-impaired! A whole house in one theme wouldn't work for me but bits & pieces do. We have many & varied collections, from fossils, shark teeth & Indian artifacts, to books (shelved by genre) & records, to old toys & dollhouses. I love my Swiffer dusters! I just did a huge purge, keeping only the stuff I was willing to display & clean. Your home has to make you and your family happy. Although visitors to my house also seem to enjoy my style! Nope, it isn't for everyone but some of us are just a little bit out of the box...

Mamie Eisenhower meets Mad Men is pretty darn close to my ideal home, so... sure! A themed home is no more restricting to me than a typical "style" (midcentury modern, traditional, contemporary, coastal, industrial, etc). At least I can have the joy of living in a time capsule. :)
