Where and How to Toss the Throw Pillows

I am often thinking about how to help people who are suffering from design paralysis. After convincing them that decorating is NOT an exact science and that they do have their own personal style, I immediately steer them toward throw pillows. Throw pillows may just be the easiest way in the world to put your own stamp on your space. They can add any kind of punch you want to an otherwise neutral room, or keep things neutral if that's the way you want to go. They are don't require a lot of commitment, there are a ton of inexpensive options (especially if you are handy with a sewing machine), and you can switch out covers seasonally to give your house a different feel in a matter of seconds. I only have ONE RULE: Do not give them the karate chop - what in the world is that about?

On the other hand, the graphic punch of one strong black and white pillow can have just as much strength for a minimalist.

This banquette is a great space saver. It serves as a sofa and as table seating, and a simple rearrangement of pillows can change the way it functions. (SIDE NOTE: I do sense a few karate chops happening here, but it looks good. I think I'll let my rule slide here).

Finally, in the bedroom. The only print in this modern bedroom comes from the throw pillows. If this person wanted to completely change the look of the room, he'd simply have to switch out those two pillows and the throw and he'd have an entirely new color story.
