Great article and love the ideas. One thing to note which isn't really touched on but I feel is a big design element to these driveways is that few of them have square edges, most step in and out which helps to soften the edge and blend it into the surrounding softscape. In regards to everyone who says you can't do this in winter climates I say why not! Attached are a couple simple introductions of grass into concrete driveways we have installed here in Ontario, Canada and they have been through many winters. I agree some designs and materials are better suited to warmer climates but don't let that stop your creativity.

We've done several driveways like this and we're in New Hampshire. For small drives we advise our clients that a snow blower or electric snow broom will work well. For larger driveways your plow company can raise their blade slightly or use a rubber edge on the blade. (It's not really rubber, just a plastic type of edge that doesn't damage the pavers).
