We love the open floor plan and have built it three times. Prior to those, we have owned 5 homes that were either separate or semi-separate kitchens. We both cook and want the constant interaction with family and guests when cooking and cleaning (which I keep doing while food is cooking). It's fun and entertaining to us and we've long since quit worrying about the kitchen mess. Being separated from all the fun and action in a closed off kitchen has never appealed to us. We both come from large families where the kitchens and living spaces ran together, even though our homes weren't large. Tom and I have great memories of family gatherings that consumed all available space. We like recreating that for our children and grandchildren. Will the kitchen space always look staged - a matter of fact right now I'm sorting dishes and it looks like a bomb went off in here. If my neighbor drops by, I hope she will feel right at home.
