For environmental reasons, we used heat-treated southern yellow pine because it has no toxic preservatives. We sealed it with Sikkens Cetol SRD-SE (low-VOC formula). The heat treated wood is very absorbent, and within 2 years it appeared dry and weathered, as you can see in this photo. Subsequently we used a high-resin transparent product by Woodrich, hoping that its slow-drying properties would allow it to soak in more and protect better. After 1 year, it seems to be protecting the wood better than the Sikkens, and looks much better. Experimenting with non-toxic products takes patience.
