My Houzz: Watch Kyrie Irving Tell Dad ‘Thank You’ With a Remodel
Kyrie Irving has accomplished a lot in the past five years. He was the No. 1 NBA draft pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2011 at the age of 19. His first-season performance as point guard for the Cavs earned him the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 2012. This season Kyrie and his teammates, which include LeBron James, once again battled their way to the NBA Finals, this time to defend their 2016 title. The Cavs lost to the Golden State Warriors in Game 5.
In light of all this, there’s one person to whom he attributes much of his success: his father, Drederick. When Kyrie was 4, his father gave up his own career as a professional basketball player to raise Kyrie and his sister, Asia. He moved the family to West Orange, New Jersey, bought a house and, when he wasn’t working, taught his son everything he knew about basketball. “He sacrificed a lot,” Kyrie says. “He really was Superdad.”
What a fantastic renovation and what a family! Makes me sorry the Cavs lost last night.
Very special! Good on Kyrie for honoring his father and his place of origin. Beautiful family. #DubNation
Despite the loss in the finals, this house is a winner Kyrie!
I was watching the game, very exciting game sorry for the loss but from the looks of this video you are the winner. we would love our lighting in your father's house.
What a great way to say thank you to your Dad! Kyrie is such an amazing basketball player with an eye for design:)! Stay Hungry & Humble! Go Cavs!
Aaand it made me cry. Love the affection and love they show each other. :)
This was simply beautiful. Not just the physical house but more so the sentiment behind it. They love and appreciate their Dad and you can see he feels the same. Nice.
Perfect tribute for upcoming Father's Day as well. Juries and Family--a class act. The Designer is top notch.
I loves these series on design and love! I love the renovation. The trophy room is the best!
What a wonderful way to honor your father. Both you and your sister appear to be very grounded and appreciative of all that your father sacrificed to make your dreams come true. Such a beautiful family inside and out. Thanks for sharing!!
Good work to all involved, from Kyrie, Asia, and their Dad, to Jules and the workers who helped translate ideas and memories into a renovated space for living. And good story, Houzz.
I love these stories!! Keep them coming, Houzz! So wonderful to see the love and appreciation of family and sacrifice transformed in these homes. Another wonderful example of an athlete who has his priorities straight and the great parenting he received.
Great job. Awesome. A great example of what close knit families do. Excellent Kyrie and Asia.
I really enjoyed watching this renovation. I'm a Cavs fan so I was disappointed by the loss! Any chance I get to gain more insight on the players from my favorite team, I jump at it! Kyrie is truly an amazing person, on and off the court!
First Luda, now Kyrie. Someone at Houzz is definitely on a quest to turn this site's cool factor up a notch...and it's working.
Great work by all team involved in the project, the amazing work is to remove and save large space, that just amazed me taking look on after view.
Keep it up :)
What a special family. Damn you Houzz for always making me cry!
Dads got to be very proud of his children. Beautiful project.
Well Done, Kyrie! You come from good genes!
Kyrie and Asia..I know first hand the sacrifice your father has made for you both. The renovation is amazing! He sooooo deserves it. You two have grown up so beautifully. Kyrie, Damon and I continue to follow your career carefully..we are so proud of you. So you have a great eye also for decorating....any other gifts? lol. Sorry for the loss. God Bless! Angel Garrett Carlos...
Nice! Much more spacious. Love it!! And, such a gorgeous close knit family.
What a lovely family and beautiful renovation! I felt emotional all through it - maybe it's my Jersey roots. Just even seeing that house and neighborhood reminds me of where I grew up in the 60's. It was a wonderful neighborhood that I left when I was 7 and always missed it and our friends. I've lived in assorted Jersey towns and other states since and still, but when someone asks me where I'm from I say "Jersey, the real world!". I miss it, and especially miss what it was when it was more affordable and less crowded. Congratulations on a job well done, and a beautiful loving act toward your wonderful father!
Always a winner Kyrie!!
Good morning Kyrie,
My name is Isadore Henry. In the name of Jesus the Christ: What a beautiful story!
As much as I like and appreciate your basketball overall-game. I LIKE AND APPRECIATE YOUR DISPOSITION AND HUMBLENESS EVEN MORE. May God continuously bless you and yours, amen!
The best,
Isadore
Great Job Kyrie and Asia! Beautiful renovation for a beautiful family:)
Wow, Kyrie and Asia you did a terrific job on this with the folks from Houzz. I just love what you did for your dad, your respectful attitudes, and deep love that exudes from you guys. #Blessings to one another!! Thank you for sharing.
Wonderful father and wonderful children. LOVE this story and love the tile Kyrie picked out!!!
Renovation was gorgeous. Beautiful story of gratitude and appreciation for a parent, from one humble basketball superstar. Kudos to Kyrie, Asia and the dad!
I love how Kyrie and Asia look out for their dad. Such great kids and great dad! Awesome renovation.
This was such a beautiful renovation. I'm still for the Cav's
I LOVE THAT VIDEO!!! LOVE THE FAMILY AND IT'S LOVE FOR EACH OTHER. AND A BEAUTIFUL REDO!!!
It is wonderful to see you bless your Dad with this kind act. I really love the colors and furnishings. Enjoy!
Beautiful renovation, beautiful family
Your dad is sooo lucky to have wonderful thoughtful children like you both. Your dad seems like a real awesome guy! Congrats!
I love this family! Hungry and Humble are truly words to live by! Mr. Irving you did a great job with these kids!
That may be the very best post I have ever seen on houzz. We use houzz all of the time to help us with our home. This description of home that Kyrie gave is exactly what is most important. What a sweet family and a wonderful story!
Wow, what a beautiful family. A great watch.
This is really lovely piece. What a great family.
I love this family. Who cares what the house looks like, these are good people. Great story telling by houzz producers. Keep it coming! Also, if dad is single, I've got single girlfriends his age. LOL.
This is an amazing
transformation. What a touching story and wonderful tribute to your dad
Kyrie.
As a marketer, I applaud Houzz. This series is great original branded content that I follow and enjoy. As a Clevelander, I applaud Kyrie and his family. Great people and we're so proud to have him on the Cavs, win or lose.
nice renovation but why in the world substitute glass kitchen cabinet doors with plain ones!?...just a little white paint in the old cabinets will be a better clean look solution.
This is just lovely.
I recently made a purchase through houzz and it was great but I give a great shout out to my homie Kyrie as I used to live in Maplewood on Wyoming Avenue and in Orange before then and Newark before that! You are truly a Jersey boy attitude heart and smarts! My sister graduated from Duke too by the way so we are with you 1,000%!
That's right Kyrie! show dad some love, without dad it will be no Kyrie
The house turned out great but that family -- so so lovely, What a credit those children are to their father.
As you have witnessed, Kyrie and Asia were raised the correct way. His dad taught him the lesson of being hungry as well as humble. This Man shows what being a father is about. Kyrie makes millions of dollars and can buy his dad any house he wanted but his dad brought that house with his own money and in a way it provides pride for dad to say yes I am humble.
Amen,To Just Know' that Your Kids are Beautiful,Smart inside and Out.Makes you Say! Just Wat u Said! They Still Care and Pay Attention to Details.
This video was not so much about renovations as it was about being able to share decision making. Dad's house was a simple house before the renovation and symbolically, it represented the "hungry" part of Dad's teaching. After the renovation, the house remained simple but it better represents the "humble" part of Dad's teaching. The renovations were not ostentatious in any way. It is apparent that this house was filled with love and direction while the children were growing up and now it will continue to be filled with love and the creation of new memories.
One of the best parts of the video was seeing how both children knew their Dad well and gave a lot of consideration to having him feel at home after the renovations. Every decision made by Kyrie and Asia was honest, kind, thoughtful and meaningful, but especially, familial.
I'm from Ontario, Canada. I have not watched much basketball but I think this Houzz video is by far the best I have seen on Houzz. Thank you for sharing your family story.
The part about the many layers of kitchen floor was priceless. That had to be a lot of work pulling that up!
Beautiful job by Jules, Kyrie, and Asia. May Dred/Dad have many more happy years in this precious home.
(DubNation over here but I'm a Kyrie fan via my son, who's super bummed this week!)
Very nice simple classic and effective - always nice to see when children show their appreciation to their parents. Well done.
Just another reason why WE LOVE HOUZZ!! What a beautiful story.
This is wonderful! Kyrie had one of the most phenomenal performances of the NBA playoffs this year, but I'm honestly more blown away by his compassion & sincerity in this video. It goes to show that it really is about WHO you are and not WHAT you are.
God bless them and their Dad whom they love so much.
Thanks
The house is gorgeous, but most importantly the relationship between the three of them is beautiful!!!
What a great way to connect Kyrie Irving with an amazing designer, who could utilize houzz to make the ideas come to life!
What a nice family! I did not know Kyrie (I am not a 'sports person') and now what I can say is that I love these guys.
This is absolutely, positively a genuine expression of love and appreciation! Job well done!
Love this great renovation and what a wonderful family.
That was so Awesome. It's wonderful to see that you and your sister can do this for your dad. Thank God for good Dad's.
I know a lot of us only clicked on this video just wanting to see the renovation in itself however, we ALL clearly are walking away with so much more. By far, my overall favorite video because of the message it sent though they probably don't realize they were sending. Hats off to Dad, as he definitely did an AWESOME job raising his kids. What an example he himself is, to want to remain in his home that he raised his kids in. It would have been so easy, to accept an ostentatious new home from his son, but again we were schooled on where they get their HUMBLENESS from. SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL!!
Sure did like watching this...I heard Kyrie's voice while searching through 'houzz' and tuned in; the family story really was touching. I felt myself smiling at the end of the video and wanting the story to go on and on! Great-job kudos to the designing team and to houzz for exposing 'us' to these wonderful things (creating comfort and joy through good taste and kindness) people are doing for their friends and families.
What a lovely and loving family! A beautiful house with a beautiful update.
Its not so much WHATS in the house (although the renovation was beautiful) to make a BEAUTIFUL home.....Its all about WHOS in the house..... to make a Home, beuatiful!
Love the family dynamic!
What a beautiful renovation for a warm and loving family. Thanks for sharing.
I just love these. Well done Houzz, you have been able to make these renovations so enjoyable for me to watch. The focus is always on family and love first while keeping your website and features tastefully in the background.
Love it!
My seven year-old son is a huge fan. We thoroughly enjoyed this glimpse into your sweet family. Thank you, Mr. Irving (both of you), for being such an inspiration.
I was on the verge of crying and commanded myself not to! But what a beautiful moment for this beautiful family. I'm thrilled for all of them and I pray that God will continue to bless them. Okay, I might actually cry after all.
"Hungry and Humble"...what a beautiful message conveyed throughout this story. It felt real, and I hope that Houzz keeps it coming with the talents they bring in showcasing how homes are made, changed, created and inspired. Terrific eye for design in production of story telling and balance at pulling at the heartstrings of the meaning of family. Well done and thank you for inspiring me to take care of my home and family. Congrats on a beautiful home, Irving family!
Daggone it! Who put this big bowl of onions in my office (wipes tears)? Beautiful story!
What a beautiful story of your family culture: Selflessness and deep abiding love. On this eve of Father's Day, we all deserve to grow up with a father in our homes. Father's are so important. Thank you!
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing. Kyrie, you're just made me a basketball fan, and you're my favourite player. What a wonderful brother-sister-dad relationship. You and Asia are great role models.
You are a class act Kyrie on and off the court! Love this. Go Cavs! Go Kyrie!
I love Kyrie!! You can see the kind of man he is. . . how he loves his family. Artist on the court and off.
Can I come for Thanksgiving? I love this family!
LOVE IT, SO BEAUTIFUL AND TOUCHING!!
Beautiful family, story and remodel!
Aww y'all are so beautiful. I love the new style. Made me cry.
Mr. Irving, your children did a nice job... But YOU!!! did a fine job as well. You have raised wonderful individuals. you have made great contribution to the human race.
Awesome Father, Great Son plus an Amazing House Transformation and Gift. Two Thumbs Up for YOU and YOUR SISTER!!! You both captured the true definition home. I have No Doubt your father is Pleased and Proud!
Wow! Who knew I could get so many feels from a home renovation. Hit me right in the heart! Thanks to Kyrie and his family for sharing!
Your home is beautiful. Congrats!
Great job, very masculine and warm, what a wonderful gift to be able to give to his Dad.
Very nice room, nice color choices and very thoughtful.
A very awesome surprise for an awesome dad from his amazing kids!! Beautiful designs
It was wonderful see the personal side of Irvine. I loved what he did for his superdad. I'm from New Jersey, and lived in West Orange, NJ for 5 years. Loved the transformation, and kudos to the designer.
This was so touching, to not only see how much this Father gave up for his children but that his children are aware of his sacrifices. What a beautiful thing to do for your Dad, Kyrie & Asia!!
Beautiful job, Kyrie! Even though I am a huge Warriors fan, much respect to you for the way you respect your Dad's wishes and doing something really great. Would have loved to do something like this for my parents when they were alive. Managed to afford to buy them a new car, so I got part way there. Good luck on your new team, (but not too much luck :) ). All the best!
I never knew about Kyrie Irving until I saw this video. What a beautiful relationship he has with his Dad. He obviously respects and loves his Dad. I am very glad that I viewed this video. Kudos Irving family. You are all role models. Thank you. P.S. The remodel was beautiful. Only thing I would change is the stairs up and down between the kitchen and living room; otherwise great!
Kyrie and Asia, what a wonderful way to show your Dad how loved he is and how much you appreciate and respect him. Every gathering will bring you all even closer. Love Is The Message !!
I grew up with my dad as a single parent and I think my dad is a superman too! What an incredible way to say thank you. I would love to do something as wonderful for my dad too. Well done, Kyrie!
Of all the Reno/makeover, this is one is my favorite! The only thing I didn't like, was the navy print rug in living room. :)
Such a beautiful renovation and family! Loved this!
Beautiful Home. Inspiring moment!
I'm forced to change my home due to the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, we had 41+ inches of standing water in our home for at least 9 days; in looking outside the usual resources for fresh ideas I found houzz to be a wonderful source. I just viewed what Kyrie and Asia did for their day and I'm even more inspired to knock down some walls and introduce a new floor plan.
A world of respect for all involved in the making of this episode. My mind is blown! What a beautiful story, experience and life lessons rolled up into a home remodel show! Congratulations to the Irving family, and all who collaborated on this remodel and episode. Inspired!
What a wonderful story. The re-design was beautiful but what was even more beautiful to see was the love the Irving family has for one another.
Kyrie,
Thank you for sharing. You are such a wonderful young man. Hungry and humble. Your family is fantastic. We need more Irving’s in this world. Love you guys , Harry
Ashton Kutcher is an executive producer?
Well done on the renovation! Also so nice to see Kyrie's lovely family. :)
