janedoe2012 Most of the photos on Houzz are staged and stylized, but that appeals to people because they can aspire to living in such pristine conditions. It is somehow imaginable enough that it works. You can imagine that clutter won't accumulate, that things will always be put away. I think the problem with home offices shown on Houzz is that we have a hard time imagining because they don't even cover the basics of what are needed. If you didn't have all those things you mention, you wouldn't even need an office. And if you do need an offic, then who cares if it looks gorgeous like they always show? It's a work space. They would do better to focus on offices with tons of storage and show you how to design storage so the room doesn't look like total crap most of the time.

For full disclosure, I don't actually have an office anymore; I simply work around the house on my laptop, and just need hidden storage space somewhere for my office supplies. I do have a small desk with scanner in a room which has other uses, but the printer is also hidden away. With wireless networks you can put your printer in a closet, armoire or storage area. If you work around the house as I do, there is no need to waste space for a dedicated office.

I work from home as well. I am a writer and so is my spouse/partner. He works in clutter and all over the house. My office looks just like these photos. I keep everything neat, orderly, and efficient. So, it all just depends on the personality of the office worker. BTW, I hate working anywhere near my spouse/partner as his clutter and disorganization irritate me.

I am currently transforming an 8 x 14 shed into a free-standing office just for me and it is going to be my decorating, just for me. I need to get out of the house sometimes. The change to my own space will be awesome and cathartic. Plus, I can listen to my music without opinions sneaking out of other's mouths.
