Growing up in Vermont, I didn’t pay much attention to the foliage season. But now, returning to the area to visit family is always an exciting prospect, especially in October.
Not only does the state have ample natural beauty, but residents also celebrate fall with pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks and more. Join me as I take the scenic route through my home state and share my suggestions for the best places to go for fall inspiration.

Burlington
Before driving through the rural towns of Vermont, explore the state’s largest city, Burlington, which boasts shops, restaurants and plenty of outdoor activities on Lake Champlain. The waterfront area overlooks New York’s Adirondack Mountains.

Richmond
Less than 15 miles from Burlington, Richmond sits at the base of Camel’s Hump, Vermont’s third-highest mountain, amid lush farmland. It’s sparsely populated, but those who live here love to use the produce from their farms to decorate the land.

Make a pit stop at a farm to buy a few pumpkins. Ralph and Rachel Towers grow and sell hundreds of pumpkins and squashes every year at their farm, on the southern end of Huntington Road.
The surrounding hills are dotted with colorful trees, making for a picturesque landscape.

Nestled in the beautiful foothills of Camel’s Hump in Huntington, Jubilee Farm sells produce as well as artisanal cheeses and meats to locals and tourists alike.

Buels Gore
For a memorable drive through the mountains, take state Route 17 up to Buels Gore where the Long Trail crosses over the road. Park your car in the small lot and enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the unspoiled landscape. The population was a whopping 30 people according to the last census.

Fayston
Route 17 also takes you by Fayston and Mad River Glen, a ski area whose motto is “ski it if you can.” It has been ranked by Ski Magazine as the most challenging terrain on the East Coast. Before the snowflakes fall, though, the foliage is absolutely breathtaking.

Waitsfield
One of Vermont’s many covered bridges provides access over the Mill Brook in Waitsfield. The covered bridges are a great place to stop for a photo.

Stowe
Best known for its skiing, Stowe is just as delightful in the fall as it is in the winter. Foliage-filled hills surround the idyllic town, at the base of Mount Mansfield.

Residents combine traditional fall decor with floral accents for an eye-catching display.
Kids can get in on the fall fun, too, with one of the many corn mazes in the area.
Old Yard Cemetery, in the center of town, is 219 years old and the eternal home for 33 Revolutionary War veterans, 17 veterans of the War of 1812 and 11 Civil War veterans.
Montpelier
Farther south, the state capital, Montpelier, is home to fewer than 8,000 residents, much smaller than Burlington (population 42,417). The Vermont State House gets dressed up for the season with chrysanthemums and flowing decorative grasses.

The historic town of Woodstock, in central Vermont, is filled with quaint shops to explore and homes decorated with mums, pumpkins, hay bales and lots of other seasonal items.

A few bright red maple trees dot the streets of Brattleboro, a small town in the southeastern corner of the state.
