What strikes me is that there are no overhead cabinets. This makes a kitchen feel less cluttered and bulky. I am seriously considering that type of design for my kitchen.

@wendig: I've found that a blend of cabinet and no upper cabinets with some upper shelving works best. A kitchen with no upper cabinets or shelving looks very stark to me. But then it's all in one's desires and requirements for a nice working kitchen. Below is mine (22 years old - no renovations) with both upper cab and shelving.

The above kitchen has numerous windows but across from the island in the sink section, there are shelves plus a fridge at the end of the sink run. Not a lot of kitchens have all those windows. Mine has one - above the sink.
