See the projects, products and pros popular among renovating homeowners, according to the 2025 U.S. Houzz & Home Study
When updating a home, it can be helpful to separate “must haves” from “nice to haves” to set priorities. Looking at what other homeowners find most important can help you strategize better. For a glimpse at the renovation projects, products and professionals popular now, check out these highlights from the recently released 2025 U.S. Houzz & Home Study.
2. Homeowners Tackle Multiple Exterior and Outdoor Projects
The column on the left of this graphic shows the share of homeowners who tackled interior room remodels, home system upgrades and other projects. The dark green bars represent the share in 2024, the midtone green bars 2023 and the light green bars 2022.
You can see how interior room remodels were again the most common type of renovation project, with 69% of renovating homeowners undertaking one in 2024. That share is down slightly, from 70% in 2023 and 72% in 2022.
Home system upgrades, such as HVAC, plumbing and electrical improvements, remained popular as well, with 63% of renovating homeowners tackling these projects — down slightly from 64% in 2023 and 65% in 2022. The same share (58%) undertook exterior home projects in 2024 as in 2023. Outdoor upgrades held steady at 53% in 2024, up slightly from 51% in 2022.

While there was a slight decline in the average number of interior room projects — 2.8 in 2024 compared with 2.9 in 2023 — the average number of projects per household aimed at upgrading home exteriors inched up to 2.5 in 2024 from 2.4 in 2023. Outdoor projects also increased slightly, from to 1.8 in 2023 to 1.9 in 2024.

3. Kitchen and Bath Purchases Dip, Others Hold Steady
A home remodel requires many products and materials. This graphic shows common purchases made by renovating homeowners in 2024. The shares of homeowners purchasing home-improvement-related products remained mostly unchanged for specific product types in 2024 compared with the previous year. Paint was again the most frequently purchased product at 65%, followed by light fixtures (51%) and faucets and shower heads (48%).
Not too far behind were lawn and garden supplies (45%) and building materials (42%). However, kitchen- and bathroom-related purchases declined slightly. The share of renovating homeowners purchasing sinks fell to 32%, a decrease of 3 percentage points, and countertops fell to 29%, also down 3 points year over year. The share of renovating homeowners buying tile for walls and backsplashes declined the most, down 4 points year over year, to 29%.

More than 1 in 5 renovating homeowners upgraded automation and heating systems (22% each), as well as cooling and security systems (21% each).
The column on the right shows the median spend for home system upgrades, which remained relatively stable across almost all categories in 2024 compared with 2023. The exceptions were plumbing systems, for which spend jumped 25% year over year, to $1,500, and heating system upgrades, which increased 2%, to $5,600. Increases are represented in the graphic with an upward-pointing arrow.

The median spend for windows and skylights increased as well, from $6,000 in 2023 to $7,000 in 2024.
Six percent of renovating homeowners upgraded a chimney in 2024, and chimney upgrade investments rose. The median spend of $2,000 in 2024 for a chimney upgrade was 14% higher than in 2023. Exterior painting projects saw the sharpest drop in median spend, down 20% to $2,000, while gutters and downspouts declined 15%, to $1,700. Investments in insulation dropped 12% year over year, to $1,325; porch or balcony upgrades declined 8%, to $2,300.

6. Homeowners Purchase More Large Furniture, Fewer Pillows and Throws
Home decor purchases remained mostly stable in 2024, with rugs leading at 49%, followed by pillows and throws at 45%. But the share of renovating homeowners purchasing pillows and throws was down slightly, by 3 percentage points year over year. Notably, the share buying large furniture increased by 4 percentage points, to 41%. This category now ranks third, up from fifth in 2023.

7. Smart Product Features Highly Sought
Renovating homeowners invested in products with both standard and smart technology in 2024, and in fact preferred smart tech in several product categories. The dark green bars in this graphic represent standard products. The light green shows smart products, which refers to technology that can be monitored or controlled from a mobile device (smartphone or tablet), a computer or both.
Light fixtures topped the list of indoor product purchases at 51%, with 38% of renovating homeowners choosing standard and 13% opting for smart versions. TVs followed at 27%, with 16% choosing standard TVs and 11% opting for smart.
Alarms and detectors (14% standard, 12% smart) and thermostats (7% standard, 16% smart) also were in demand. Smart versions led for wireless doorbell cameras (16%), streaming-media players (10%), home assistants (14%) and garage door openers (8%) as well. And among smart security products, homeowners chose wireless door locks (8%), cameras (9%) and motion or other sensors (5%).

As in previous years, the vast majority of renovating homeowners (9 in 10) hired pros for their renovation projects in 2024.
Specialty service providers were again the most frequently hired type of pro. These include electricians, plumbers and HVAC specialists. (See next graphic for a breakdown of specialty service providers.) The share of homeowners hiring specialty service providers has increased over the past two years: from 46% in 2022 to 47% in 2023 and 49% in 2024. The average number of specialty pros hired for a project without help from a general contractor, builder, design-build company or kitchen or bath remodeler remained stable for the second year in a row at 1.7.

Kitchen projects historically have been the most popular type of renovation project. But in 2024, the same share of renovating homeowners (24%) remodeled a guest bathroom as remodeled the kitchen, marking a notable shift. Additionally, an equal share of homeowners built an addition to the kitchen as built an addition to the bathroom (2% each) to accommodate upgrades. (The dark green bars in this graphic represent the share of renovating homeowners who took on a remodel. The light green portions represent additions.)
About a fifth of renovating homeowners remodeled a primary bathroom (22%). About the same share tackled a living room remodel (18%). Following in popularity were remodels of a guest bedroom, closet, laundry room and primary bedroom, all at 13% to 14%.
The right-hand column shows dollar amounts representing the median spend for each space in 2024. The up and down arrows represent an increase or decrease in spend in 2024 compared with the previous year. Those without an arrow remained unchanged during the period.
