always have liked dark, rich brown paired with light gray or blue-gray. and I used to have -and greatly miss!-a pair of orange velvet slipper chairs circa 1940s. Those chairs sat on a pale Saltillo tile floor, in a room with mid tone beige (Cashew Crunch, Valspar) walls, with a black and white zebra throw rug and a grayish-blue sofa. Somehow it worked.

I wasn't going to say anything when I saw it in the text, but when I saw it again in the comments I had to say something. My Grandfather was on the Bataan Death March, followed by four years as a POW of the Japanese. That awful event in history is not something to trivialize to make a point about color schemes.
