@hsmeghan you are right; the best dorm rooms are those created by the kids themselves with the stuff they can salvage! Here’s my son’s-no decorating help (or money) from he and his roomie’s parents!

@altadavey, cool room! Did they build their own loft?

I'm impressed that your son decorated at all. My son is a graduate student and lives in a very nice 4-bedroom apartment in a large, beautiful student apartment complex right across from the campus where he just pays for one room. He has been there a year now and hasn't done much of anything to decorate or even unpack some of his boxes! He also only had one roommate in the spring and now another one for this school year. I would say he's lucked out that way since he's older, fairly introverted, doesn't party or even drink -- he's a serious, very gifted straight-A grad student majoring in Math. Both roommates so far have kept to themselves and are pretty quiet. Hoping they don't move a third or fourth student in with him!

@meghan the dads helped them plan the loft but they did most of the work themselves. Life skills, no matter what the major is! The sofa was the short part of an old sectional. Grateful to have a husband who knows how to do stuff and taught his sons to do so. Our other son once changed a plug on a fan and his roommates (all smart enough to go to Uof Mich) stood watching, amazed he could do it; son couldn’t get over that they couldn’t fix stuff! Good for you for not intervening with your son! If he’s alright with boxes etc., what matters? He’ll find his way; as a math grad he’ll have many choices!
