Are you looking for a way to change your kitchen without changing your entire household budget? The recession has forced a lot of us to cut back on renovations and updates to our homes. However, we don't have to miss out entirely on updating the spaces that we'd like to alter. There are little things that we can do in each and every room which don't cost a lot of money but do make a big impact on the design of the space.

In the kitchen, you can replace little things like faucets and lights or replace one big item like your stove's cooker hood. You can add colors and textures by hanging a collection of dishes, investing in interesting kitchen jars or laying a rug out on the floor. Think small touches to make big design changes in your kitchen.

Hang a collection of dishes on the wall. You can use dishes that you already have or pick up some beautiful decorative dishes for a bargain at a local yard sale. This is easy affordable kitchen art that can make a big beautiful change to your cooking area.

Replace your cooker hood. There are dozens of really unique interesting cooker hoods that you can use to replace the boring one that probably sits atop your stove. This can be a real statement piece.

Add some color. The simplest way to make a big change to any room is to add some color to it. If you're feeling bold, repaint your kitchen in a strong new hue. If you don't want to be quite that drastic then some bold new colored furniture (such as these red dining room chairs) could be a good alternative.

Add a rug to the kitchen. Most kitchen spaces have floors which are wood, tile or linoleum because these are easy to clean. Add an area rug and you add an unusual new look to the room. I love this simple circular rug that sets the dining area apart from the cooking area in this cute kitchen.

I added a rug to my kitchen but I ended up removing it b/c I was washing it twice a week. After a few weeks I just said forget it!

I have a rug runner in my kitchen all along the sink. it hides a bunch of stuff cuz it is a karastan runner. You just clean it professionally seasonally and wipe up any spills as you go. I have had it for over 10 years..not a problem.
