I heartily agree! We ended up with a 12 foot long kitchen table made from slabs of a tree we had taken down. We love it - there are always 12 chairs ready and waiting for whoever is around, and we can easily fit 16. There are three stools at the kitchen island for those who want to keep the cook(s) company, but the table is where we sit, relax, and enjoy our time together. Usually it's just family, so a good 4-5 feet at one end of the table is almost always full of the detritus of life. (We generate a lot of detritus in our house). But if someone drops in, there is always room. Wouldn't trade that table for a bigger island or more counter space. Ever. (Bonus: the table separates into 4 free-standing tables, so we can reconfigure it in various ways. It also works great as two tables for 8 - and that way we have one table for detritus and one for meals!)

Only one word of caution when considering substituting a kitchen table for an island work top. When you have long legs, as I do, the kitchen table is too low to use for food prep, kneading etc. Our kitchen island is actually higher than normal for this reason. Make sure it works for you first. Although it may look lovely, It's not very romantic when you are standing over it with an aching back.

Collicott's Workshop

It appears like a kitchen table revival is in full motion. Sales for custom tables have been at the top of my list of things to make. The gathering place for friends family and social time is at the table were we can mix food and social aspects all together for an unforgettable night!
