10 Soaking Tubs With Stylish Streamlined Decks
Custom surrounds create elegant, spa-like bathrooms while offering comfort for everyday use and aging in place
Sculptural freestanding tubs have been a popular feature in primary bathrooms in recent years. But another type of soaking tub has been gaining attention lately: bathtubs with slim decks and surrounds.
These modern tubs combine elegance with everyday comfort — perfect for a spa-style bathroom or one designed for aging in place. The deck provides support when getting in and out of the tub and offers a built-in surface for bath products and accessories. Custom designs can also showcase beautiful materials such as natural stone, wood and tile. And unlike the massive whirlpool tubs of the past, these streamlined versions don’t take up excessive space or force awkward room layouts.

2. Contemporary Lake Cabin
This bathroom on the shores of Minnesota’s Leech Lake features clean lines while nodding to rustic lakeside camps. The tub surround blends the two styles, with a classic white elongated subway tile surround paired with a more modern black deck for striking contrast. Tub surrounds can also be extended into adjacent shower stalls, as Albertsson Hansen Architecture and Interior Design did here. Inside the shower, the surround becomes a ledge for bath products and a spot to prop up a foot while shaving.

3. Organic and Spa-Like
Organic materials and modern lines create a soothing atmosphere in this Del Mar, California, bathroom created by M. Swabb Interior Design. The undermount bathtub appears as though it were carved from a large block of White Pearl quartzite. The tub surround continues this warm stone seamlessly into the shower stall, where it forms part of a wraparound bench.

4. Freestanding Focal Point
A tub surround can also give a built-in tub the look of a freestanding centerpiece. In this luxurious Southern California bathroom, Mark Design used a marble with dramatic movement for the surround. Centering the tub beneath the windows establishes it as a striking focal point. The stepped-down edges of the deck create a beveled effect that echoes the proportions of the vanity’s thick countertops. Meanwhile, a floor-mounted tub filler adds sculptural presence and keeps the tub surround visually uncluttered.

7. Maintaining Minimalism
Ainslie-Davis Construction of Seattle gave this bathroom a minimalist vibe, with just the right amount of carefully edited flair introduced through color and pattern. The bathtub surround — one long white block — is the most pared-back element in the room and does double duty as a bench in the shower stall.

Located in an old sea captain’s house on the island of Nantucket, this bathroom shows how a tub surround can highlight beautiful materials. Anne Becker Design mixed classic cottage elements like beadboard wainscoting and wood shutters with more elegant finishes, including crystal, polished nickel, marble mosaic tile and Carrara marble. The beadboard continues along the tub surround, while the tub’s deck provided an opportunity to carry the Carrara marble from the countertop over to the bathtub.
