I think a dumb waiter is almost as "neat" as a secret room. Since it will hold a fair amount of weight (someone said 50 lbs), it could be used to hide any number of items.

#7 is not a "quirky" nor a "vintage" detail - if you live on a farm or ranch. In fact, it's a given necessity when you work in mud boots frequently. When I purchased my first ranch some 35 years ago, it had 2 scrappers readily available by the back and front doors. Then 20 years ago, I built a ranch house on a larger property and installed 3 scrappers - one by each door. And for my next house - a cottage in the woods - yup, you guessed it. There will be a scrapper by outside doors and a pair of mud boots nearby waiting to be used.

I'm one of those people who see value in relics like dumbwaiters. I love old homes and the unique designs they have. It's why I'm planning to have a home built that has the charm of an older home. I'm still debating about whether or not I'd want to have a dumbwaiter installed or not. http://www.octagonlifts.com/commercial/dumbwaiters.aspx
