We had a Kitchenaid dishwasher several years back that had a recall because of some reports of fires due to an issue with the rinse aid dispenser. The repairman who came to fix ours said that while people tend to, they should never run dishwashers overnight. I was guilty of doing it because ours wasn't very quiet and annoyed us while watching tv but that made me stop. It makes sense to run appliances while you're home and awake, just in case the unthinkable should happen.

I never go out and leave any appliance "going" durring the daytime. I turn "off the TV" too. same at night. only thing turned on is the fridge and freezer.

We had a dishwasher fire a little over a year ago in a dishwasher that was less than a year old. Fortunately, we were home and awake, and my son had gone to the kitchen for a glass of water. He saw the smoke and flames even before the fire alarm sounded and we were able to extinguish it easily. Even though I hate it, I wash by hand now.
