I am in theprocess of this. The whole design has changed dramatically as we go. I had a beautiful reclaimed brick wood burning (converted to gas log set) fireplace and hearth, with a solid oak mantle. There were custom oak cabinets and book cases on either side. I especially loved it at Christmas time :) It did however, overpower the space and so the reno began (whole main floor reno). We removed everything and installed a 42" cosmo gas fireplace unit. My husband was determined to have his (too large!) TV over the fireplace. We have a living room / library with no tv on the main floor as well, and this room is off the eating area and kitchen (down two steps). One wall and part of another are windows... so it does make sense to have a tv... but it is 55 inches wide and 33 inches high, so that is my dilema! I have found a matt finish grey black 12 x 24 tile for the entire front of the chase, and yesterday I found a black granite stone remnant. I plan to have the granite brushed and the edge chiseled. I want the tv to "disappear" (ha!), and am hoping that dark tile will help that. I want the mantle to help deflect heat so I can have the tv as low as possible to the gas fireplace. The slab is 68" by 11". The fireplace is 42" wide. The chase is 61" wide finished. Here is my Question. What size should I make the mantle? I think 59" by 8", and installed 15" above the fireplace opening for best heat deflection from the tv. Thoughts?

All Seasons Fireplace

The first thing to do is consult the gas fireplace manual. The manual will give you the specs for that particular fireplace which will tell you where you can safely place the T. V. If you are using non-combustible materials throughout, it will give you added peace of mind. Take a look at this solution on our blog. We used a heat shift kit from Valor and a L- 2 linear fireplace to allow the T.V to be at eye level. Post a finished photo! https://www.allseasonsfire.com/blog/the-fireplace-and-television-design-solution

Tile is on and grouted. Opening is for TV bracket and cables (tv much larger - see comment above). Have to call to confirm granite mantle. Cabinets are being built!
