Ready to clear the air? These thoughtful designs above the cooktop show how to do it in good taste
Yes, the system hidden in a range hood works hard to filter out or vent cooking odors, steam and even grease. But the hood itself doesn’t have to look like a workhorse. See how these models get the job done while also adding a lovely element to their kitchens. Blending in or standing out, they offer plenty of inspiration for all kinds of kitchen styles. Click the link below each to see more photos and details of the kitchen, and let us know in the Comments which hood style side you’re on: subtle or sensational?
2. Verdant Vintage
Green cabinetry topped the homeowners’ wish list for the kitchen in their historic landmark Seattle home — a preference they figured out using Houzz ideabooks. They also loved a vintage English look, hence the brass cabinet hardware, crystal knobs and lots of Calacatta marble. Interior designer Tammara Stroud extended the marble from the countertops to a hood-grazing backsplash, and the hood itself is the same shade of green as the cabinets (Chimichurri by Benjamin Moore).

3. Team Player
In light oak stained to match the cabinets, island base and paneled fridge and freezer, this vent hood in an Oklahoma spec-home kitchen by designer Kirby Foster Hurd lets a creamy limestone backsplash garner all the glory. The hood has a Shaker-style inset panel and meets the ceiling, à la the cabinetry, for an overall kitchen design that’s easy on the eyes.

4. Textural Treat
To fit in with its historic and coastal location (the island of Nantucket in Massachusetts), this kitchen couldn’t go too far afield from a traditional New England look. But Kaitlin McQuaide didn’t simply toe the design line; she brought in boldly veined marble for the countertops and backsplash. The matte plaster vent hood is subtle enough to cede the spotlight to the marble and the beautiful blue cabinetry but textured enough to avoid being a wallflower.

5. Traditional Value
Corbels and a mantel-like base give this vent hood in a Minnesota kitchen a traditional feel and help frame the range backsplash, composed of mosaic Calacatta marble tile and brass. The hood’s color matches the browns of the pendant lights, island base and open cupboard’s interior, keeping the eye moving around the space. This is designer Mary Maney’s own kitchen, which formerly featured a plethora of basic honey oak cabinets and flooring in a similar tone.

6. Taking Shape
As in the previous photo, this range hood helps break up a cabinet run. But designer Wendy Wilson chose a trapezoidal shape to offset the rectangular cabinets in the Southern California kitchen. The hood has a band at the top that ties it in with the cabinets, but otherwise it’s an unobtrusive white, to let the lovely blue-green tile below (Waveline Mini in Lagoon Matte by Island Stone) stand out.

7. Tall Order
A reclaimed-wood band on the plaster vent hood coordinates beautifully with the ceiling beams in this California kitchen by designer Shannon Ggem. The hood’s tall height and an existing soffit meant that Ggem had to move the range wall forward, but the extra effort paid off: The hood now makes a statement, but it’s a soft-spoken one rather than a shout.

8. Playing the Angles
This angled range hood in a Northern California kitchen picks up on a nearby original angled window run, which designer Anne Norton of AND Interior Design Studio kept. It and the other black elements — the stove, faucet and Absolute Black granite countertops — give the kitchen a grounded feel without weighing it down. And see that curve above the hood? Norton raised and curved the ceiling to tie it in with arches elsewhere in the 1920s Spanish Colonial home.

9. Solo Exhibition
The lack of cabinetry on the range wall in this Pennsylvania kitchen meant the vent hood had to stand on its own. And thanks to its simple yet effective design with a white oak detail that matches nearby shelves, it does just that. Note too how the band draws the eye down toward that swoon-worthy gray-blue stove with copper accents — which Seashal Belldina designed the entire kitchen around.

10. Banding Together
A metal artisan crafted this brass-accented range hood in a beach house near Santa Cruz, California, by Katelyn Gilmour of KBG Design. It nods to the cabinets’ crystal-and-brass pulls and shell-and-brass knobs while holding its own. And despite being a statement piece, it doesn’t overshadow the glossy light blue backsplash tiles (Seaport Topacio by TileBar) or lower cabinets’ blue paint (Midnight Haze by Dunn-Edwards).

11. Fitting Right In
Given the 9-foot ceiling in this Seattle kitchen, designer Judith Wright Sentz placed an elongated range hood between two narrow vertical cabinets to bring the eye up. The home was built in 1906, and the black metal unit with strap details fits right in. It also plays nicely with the soapstone countertops, glossy white subway tile and light green-gray cabinets (Comfort Gray by Sherwin-Williams).

12. Navy Base
Painted a deep blue (Naval by Sherwin-Williams) to match the island, this custom wood range hood adds a dash of color amid maple cabinets in a Texas kitchen. It also has a graceful shape that draws the eye, and its top piece resembles the crown molding of the cabinetry for added flair. Designer Mae Reedy went for a hood versus the previous ventilation setup underneath the cooktop to free up space for drawers to hold pots and pans.

13. Riveting Moment
Architect Angie Lipski of MMW Architects had a high-end professional Italian range in her Montana kitchen, but the previous tiled hood fell far short in style. So, as she was redoing the entire kitchen (using Houzz ideabooks for inspiration), she designed a new hood and had it custom-fabricated. At $5,000, the zinc-and-brass attention-getter with banding and rivets was a splurge, but it creates a distinctive design moment.

14. Greener Pastures
Designer Heather Pino of Metro Design Build took this Chicago kitchen back to its late-1800s roots, after a 1990s remodel had stripped away its character. Enter rich green cabinetry (Vintage Vogue by Benjamin Moore) and a range hood painted to match. The upper cabinets and hood also share Shaker-style fronts, a detail that subtly pulls the eye up to visually elongate the space without detracting from the striking black stove below.
Range: 30-inch Classic in matte black, Big Chill

15. Shining Star
The homeowners’ love of Star Wars clearly shows in this Detroit kitchen by designer Rachel Nelson of Concetti, but the references are sophisticated rather than literal. In gleaming brass against a field of black, the cylindrical range hood has a starring role (even though its inspiration, the golden droid C-3PO, was more of a supporting character in the film). And don’t those white veins in the black quartz backsplash look like the aftereffects of a spacecraft shooting away in hyperdrive?

This white-painted plaster range hood in an expanded Kansas kitchen helps keep a run of white oak upper cabinets from feeling visually heavy. Its serene color and gentle curved front also pull focus to the light-reflecting backsplash tiles. Designer Nina Schmidt of Schloegel Design Remodel brought in green-gray cabinetry (painted in Laurel Woods by Sherwin-Williams) and soapstone-look quartz perimeter countertops for a beautifully balanced color palette.
