Colorful chrysanthemums, piles of pumpkins and gourds, and rich fall wreaths adorn these festive entryways. Whether you’re looking for some last-minute decorating ideas or simply want to flip through some pretty pictures of fall, sit back and enjoy this roundup of porches, front doors and stoops that celebrate the season.
PETER ATKINS AND ASSOCIATES., LLC
1. Doorstep Extravaganza

A cornucopia of fall delights, this New York doorstep design celebrates “more is more” when it comes to a fall entrance. The seasonal decoration, by Peter Atkins & Associates, includes corn stalks, curling gooseneck gourds, potted mums and ornamental cabbages, as well as pumpkins boosted up on hay bales for added height.
The LaurelRock Company
2. New England Entry

This charming New England entry styled by The LaurelRock Co. has a more pared-down seasonal look, featuring a pretty harvest wreath flanked by corn stalks tied to frame the entrance and a couple of pumpkins.

3. Mums and Pumpkins

You can’t go wrong with cheerful pots of chrysanthemums paired with pumpkins or gourds for long-lasting entry decor. This pre-Revolutionary home in New York was already dressed for fall with its rich red shingle exterior, but a few dashes of color from pumpkins and mums help the doorway stand out from across the yard.

Bedding mums purchased for seasonal decor can be planted in garden beds later in a spot with full sun.

4. Country Charm

With corn stalks tied to to each post of the porch and bright pumpkins marching down the steps, this Massachusetts porch looks warm and welcoming for the fall season. To get a country look of your own, consider adding corn stalks, a bundle of wheat or a hay bale to your doorstep.
Greenhaven Landscapes Inc.
5. Gussied-Up Container

For this entryway arrangement in front of a Chicago home, Greenhaven Landscapes filled a pair of limestone urns with purple fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum’), bedding mums and trailing wire vine (Muehlenbeckia sp.). The urns stand proudly above a cascade of pumpkins and gourds spilling from harvest buckets onto a bed of hay.

6. Southern Charm

The orange, peach and dusty-green fairy-tale pumpkins nod to fall without clashing with the dining vignette on the porch of this Jacksonville, Florida, home by Troy Spurlin Interiors. The dark wreath looks good now and can transition into winter, perhaps with a plaid bow, to add interest to the entry.

7. Seeing Double

This symmetrical fall display outside a Craftsman-style home in New Hampshire features two nearly mirror-image arrangements of corn stalks, bedding mums, potted purple fountain grass, hay bales and pumpkins.
The LaurelRock Company
8. Fall Elegance

There’s something satisfying about the repetition of globe forms, from the clipped boxwood spheres to the rounded pumpkins, outside this Connecticut home styled by The LaurelRock Co. Even the wreath features mini globes in the form of baby pumpkins fastened to a mossy frame.
Living Green Design
9. California Sunshine

This fresh take on a fall wreath by Brandon Pruett of Living Green Design features juicy seasonal produce — ‘Fuyu’ persimmons and Buddha’s hand — alongside burgundy leucadendron branches, succulent cuttings and sprays of lichen-covered twigs. Against the lemon-yellow front door of this San Francisco Bay Area home, the wreath feels like a welcome jolt of inspiration for seasonal decorating in warmer climates.

10. Window Box Delight

One can imagine that this window box garden provides long-lasting enjoyment for the residents of this Chicago home as well as for neighbors passing by. The design, by KMS Gardens and Design, includes some unexpected fall ingredients, such as edible ‘Bright Lights’ rainbow chard and sprigs of berries, along with bedding mums, coral bells (Heuchera sp.), golden sweet flag (Acorus gramineus ‘Ogon’) and variegated ivy.
Rikki Snyder
11. Country-Style Porch

This New England home is dressed up for the season with a collection of pumpkins and potted mums displayed in a pretty arrangement along the steps of the porch. The homeowners made use of an old wooden chair to boost up smaller pumpkins and containers for a closer view.
KMS Gardens and Design
12. Peppers and Pomegranates

In another entry display by KMS Gardens and Design, the designers used a rich combination of potted plants and preserved elements to warm up a Chicago home’s entry.

Plants used in the arrangement include ‘Bright Lights’ rainbow chard, ornamental peppers, coral bells (Heuchera sp.), and orange kalanchoe alongside texture-rich sprays of dyed eucalyptus, sprays of bittersweet berries and preserved pomegranates mounted on sticks.

Note: In an area where the Oriental variety of bittersweet is invasive, American bittersweet is a good substitute. Both species are toxic.

13. Gourd Party

More is merrier when it comes to decorative gourds this time of year. Displayed in baskets and rustic containers, they can transform a porch into a fall celebration. In this Columbus, Ohio, home, wooden tool boxes, a woven cornucopia basket and an old toy wagon display a collection of gourds and pumpkins.
Kat Nelson Designs
14. Warm Entrance

It doesn’t take much to warm up the entrance to a modern farmhouse-style home in Atlanta for the fall season. With a hay bale as a base, bright pumpkins and Indian corn form a welcoming seasonal display.
15. Pumpkin Parade

You can’t help but smile when you see this collection of pumpkins cascading down the steps of this Dallas home. The variety of pumpkin shapes and colors, as well as the sheer size of many of the pumpkins, is worth noting.

Design tip: Even if you don’t go quite so pumpkin-crazy, tuck in sprigs of brightly colored leaves (variegated crotons were used here) to fill in the gaps in a pumpkin pile.

When I see dead cornstalks and bales of hay I think of rats. Fresh flowers and statuary are more pleasant and inviting.

Since some areas have snow already, maybe some snowy Halloween, fall and Thanksgiving ideas would be nice next year from Houzz. In Louisiana, we are waiting to see if we will get a 4th hurricane.
A man walks into a bar in Louisiana and says, “I’ll have a Corona and 3 hurricanes.” The bartender says, “That will be $20.20.” (If you didn’t know, a hurricane is a very potent drink in New Orleans.) 2020 will be a year to remember!

Wow! You can sure tell by the tone of some of these comments that we're in the 9th month of a pandemic.

I have 2 large pumpkins and a golden toned wreath on the front door that I set up just before Hallowe'en and keep until about now or next weekend when I put up Christmas decorations.

It sounds like some people are having cold temps and snow already. I live in Virginia and we haven't seen our first frost yet. I'm still cleaning up the leaves and dried up flowers in my yard. But there are 2 camellia bushes in bloom in the back garden, pink and white. And there are 2 red camellia bushes on either side of the front door that are starting to open.

I wish everyone a safe and healthy holiday season. Spring and vaccines are just around the corner.
