2024Q3 Houzz Renovation Barometer - Architectural & Design Sector
Findings from the Q3 2024 Houzz Renovation Barometer, which tracks residential renovation market expectations, project backlogs and recent activity among businesses in the architectural and design services sector.
The Expected Business Activity Indicator related to project inquiries and new committed projects increased to 60 for Q3 (compared with 58 for Q2): This is driven by a 5-point increase in expectations for project inquiries, while new committed projects remained steady at 60 for Q3. Architects and interior designers report 3-point and one point increase in expectations for Q3, respectively with the indicators reaching 60 for both business groups. A score above 50 points indicates that a larger number of firms expect their business activity to improve rather than decline compared to the previous quarter. See additional subsector and regional data.
The Project Backlog Indicator is 5.7 weeks nationally at the start of Q3 2024: The overall backlog for the architectural and design services sector is shorter by 0.7 weeks compared with last year (6.4 weeks). This year-over-year decrease is driven by both architects and interior designers, who report shorter wait times, down 0.2 and 1.4 weeks, respectively from last year.
Backlogs vary across all regional divisions among businesses in the architectural and design services sector. Businesses in the West North Central division (Missouri, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana) reported backlogs of 9.4 weeks, while backlogs in the Mountain division (including Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, Nevada, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Montana) were much shorter (3.3 weeks). Backlogs reported by architects in the West North Central division (13 weeks) are the driving force for long wait times, whereas the wait to begin a new project with an interior designer in that area is only 3.4 weeks. Compared with the same quarter one year ago, backlogs for the architectural and design services sector are shorter across six of the nine Census divisions (across all but the New England, West North Central, and West South Central divisions).See additional subsector and regional data (PDF).
The Recent Business Activity Indicator related to project inquiries and new committed projects increased to 60 in Q2 2024 (compared with 53 in Q1): This increase is attributed to an uptick in both project inquiries and new committed projects to 60 (up 7 and 6 points from Q1, respectively). The indicator is at 60 for both architects and interior designers marking widespread improvements in the business activity. See additional subsector and regional data (PDF).
The Q3 2024 U.S. Houzz Renovation Barometer was fielded from June 29 through July 9, 2024 and garnered responses from 240 architects and 456 interior designers on Houzz (n=696 in the architectural and design services sector). See detailed methodology here.
