We plan to do something similar to the first makeover in our home. I intend to use stacked stone for the facing and have a "floating" mantle, as opposed to the mantle sitting at the top of the stone. We demo'd the old brick down to drywall. I originally wanted to downsize it, but to avoid drywall patching, paint, and baseboard additions, I've decided to go back with the same dimensions as before. Our fireplace opening is approximately 42 inches wide. The rock will extend 23 1/2 inches out from each side of the fireplace opening, and will extend at least 32 1/2 inches (to cover the existing mess) above the opening. My ceiling is approximately 17 feet high. All of the pictures I have seen with this scenario shows the stone facing going to the ceiling. My questions are:
In order to make it look proportional, at what height should I place the mantle? Does the mantle need to be a certain width for balance? How high up should we go with the stacked stone (without going to the roof)? Is it going to look ridiculous if we don't take the stone to the roof? Help, please!....and THANK YOU!
