No matter the style of your home or how long you’ve lived in it, there’s a good chance you’ll want to refresh your rooms, add privacy or save space at some point. Do all three with a surprisingly versatile solution most homeowners may not have considered — until now. Believe it or not, you can easily — yes, easily — transform any room with a barn door. A stylish and practical interior door solution, barn doors have an array of applications, from blocking an unattractive view to giving a room a quick makeover.
1. Add Privacy
If your goal is to conceal spaces, such as a laundry room, installing a barn door is a way to add an attractive feature to your home while keeping the clutter of laundry baskets out of view. Similarly, homeowners often want to conceal children’s playrooms. While they’re nice to have, playrooms quickly accumulate a jumble of toys, games and books, which make them tricky to keep organized. A barn door keeps the chaos contained when company’s coming. Or in the kitchen, barn doors can create a hidden, easy-to-access food pantry where there once were only open shelves.
For an en suite bathroom, a distinctive barn door style featuring five glass panels is a practical solution that adds an aesthetic upgrade. “The 5 Equal Lite is a crowd favorite because it lets light flow seamlessly throughout the home, while also providing a level of privacy,” says Michael Truelove, senior product manager for interior doors at Masonite.

2. Refresh Your Style
Today’s barn doors are more design-forward than you might think. “Homeowners often consider barn doors a solution only in rustic homes,” says Truelove, “but today’s styles can be anything from modern to industrial to classic and more.” The choices allow you to enhance the decor of your home — or simply give it a stylish boost.

Add textural contrast to a neutral room with a Z-Bar door, or keep classic notes intact with the more traditional styles. Alternatively, an iconic K-Bar or diagonal barn door can add a unique statement and elevate any room. There’s something for everyone and every space. “The great thing about barn doors is they cover a cross-section of design trends,” says Truelove: “I wouldn’t say one style is more versatile than the rest, since it depends on style preference and use case.”
3. Save Space
No matter the square footage of your home, there are times when you need to add just a little more space. There are instances when a conventional door won’t work: the guest bath in a narrow hallway, a small mudroom, a closet in a primary bedroom or a shallow pantry. In the past, the only solution may have been a pocket door, but barn doors are infinitely easier to install and maintain. “Like pocket doors, barn doors take up less space than hinged doors, but in this case, all of the hardware, including the track, is outside of the wall and easy to access,” says Truelove. And if your pantry has a window, a barn door with frosted glass panels is a space-saving solution that works beautifully since it allows more light into the kitchen.
If you’re concerned about width, you shouldn’t be. “Most Masonite barn door styles come in the common door size of 36 by 84 inches, while select designs also come in 42 by 84 inches,” says Truelove. Two single door kits can be installed together to create a double barn door for dividing larger spaces or openings.

The 90-Minute Makeover
Is it really possible to add style, privacy and space in 90 minutes? The answer is yes. These barn doors designed for DIY success. Kits come with a pre-drilled barn door slab, installation instructions and all of the necessary hardware: mounting board, track and rollers, stoppers and guides, screws/bolts and a handle. (Tools are not included.)
Bonus Tips: “We make a few recommendations to ensure the best and safest installation of our doors,” says Truelove. “First, measure the width of your opening and available horizontal and vertical wall space to be sure you purchase the right size door, and read the instructions carefully before you begin.” Keep in mind the kits are designed to work as a total system and any modifications will void the warranty and may cause the unit to work improperly. Truelove recommends that due to the weight of the doors, you don’t try to go it alone. “And don’t forget to wear appropriate personal protective equipment like gloves and safety goggles,” he says.

I know barn doors are trendy -- & some are certainly good looking, but in almost every place I see a barn door, I would prefer a pocket door, if feasible. A barn door takes up space where I'd rather hang a piece of artwork!
Pocket doors are great, but barn doors are much less expensive and less complicated to install post-construction.
