5 Ways to Make the Most of This Weekend
Tidy up, remember Grandparents Day and ponder a new paint color
With National Grandparents Day falling this weekend (not to mention the first noticeable downshift in daylight), there is a good reason to put quality family time on the schedule. Here are five ideas for weekend could-dos, including a couple of tidying and garden-maintenance tasks, plus a few purely-for-fun outings (tiny house tour, anyone?).
1. Clean your room. There’s something about a clean room — swept and vacuumed floors, shining windows, crisp sheets — that makes the world seem just a little bit better. Take the time before Sunday evening to tidy up your bedroom, and you can feel good knowing you’re heading into a new week on the right foot.
2. Create a meaningful gift for grandparents. If you’d like to do something special for National Grandparents Day, which is coming up Sunday, Sept. 10, think beyond the typical store-bought gifts and create something using meaningful family photographs or home videos, instead. Curate a photo book or album and pair family photos with written reminiscences or have some old family videos transferred onto DVD. Then carve out some quality time to sit and chat as you flip through the book (or watch the home movies) together. If you have kids, involving them in the process is a wonderful way to help the younger generation learn family stories.

3. Step out of your color comfort zone. If you’ve been stuck in a rut when it comes to interior paint colors, consider taking a field trip to the paint store this weekend to pick up swatches that make your heart flutter a bit. How about a rich, spicy red for the kitchen or dining room? Or a vibrant turquoise in the entry? Pick up any color chips — or even better, giant-size swatches — that catch your eye and bring them home to view in your space. You might just surprise yourself!
4. Take a twirl through a tiny home. There’s a reason tiny homes have enchanted so many folks: These pint-size homes tend to be well-designed and built using beautiful materials. If you happen to live in Tennessee, the 2017 Tennessee Tiny House Festival will be held this Friday through Sunday, Sept. 8-10, in Chattanooga. Find out more about the festival here.
Not in Tennessee? You may be able to test out the tiny home lifestyle for yourself by seeking out a tiny home to tour — or even a tiny house vacation rental — in your own area.

5. Refresh your street-side garden. This little strip of green beside the street is likely looking a little bedraggled by the end of summer. Help perk things up by pulling weeds, cutting back spent blooms and planting grasses or fall-blooming flowers. If this area gets too much foot traffic to support flowers, consider adding stepping stones, mulch and ground cover that can handle some foot traffic.
