See the latest looks and features recently launched at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show
Countertop and other surface materials and styles are constantly evolving. Many new applications, integrated features and dramatic looks were on display at the recent Kitchen & Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas. To see the latest innovations, check out these exciting surface trends appearing now.
Cambria’s new Berkshire Satin Ridge quartz, which features textured metal-like veining, is used on every surface but the ceiling in this bathroom.
Laminam, an Italian manufacturer of large-format porcelain surfaces, launched its twO series of ultrathin 2-millimeter slabs. The thinness allows for flat and curved applications, including on walls, cabinetry, appliances and furniture. The series includes the Flora Luce style seen here as wall cladding. The design features a pattern of shadowed botanical silhouettes.
Dekton by Cosentino announced a partnership with Urban Bonfire, a maker of outdoor kitchen cabinets. Called Urban Bonfire x Dekton, the collection will offer a curated selection of Dekton surfaces for cabinet cladding. You can also choose to include appliance options in the cabinet, including a Fògher drop-in grill, an undercounter refrigerator, a sink and faucet, and PITT Cooking power burners that seamlessly integrate into the countertop surface. Grabbing lots of attention at KBIS was FreePower, the integrated countertop charging system that debuted at KBIS last year and won the Best in Show award during the Best of KBIS awards. New this year is a three-way partnership that combines FreePower with James Martin Vanities and Cosentino’s Silestone countertops.

3. Silica-Free, Low-Silica and Sustainable Options
At last year’s KBIS, silica — and how to reduce it in engineered countertops and surfaces to prevent harm to the health of slab cutters — was an important topic among manufacturers. This year, many companies touted their silica-free and low-silica options, along with other sustainable features. Caesarstone’s new ICON series is crystalline-silica-free and made with about 80% recycled materials. The Ocean Sage style is shown here.

Neolith sintered stone is a low-silica material and is 100% recyclable. Some styles contain up to 98% recycled materials. Its production is eco-friendly as well. All industrial water is recycled, Neolith says,100% of the electrical energy used during the production process comes from sources with a guarantee of renewable origin, and the company recycles more than 96% of the industrial waste generated. Neolith’s new WhiteSands style is shown here as wall and floor cladding.
Cosentino launched its new Inlayr design technology for the Q0 composition collection, which uses up to 90% recycled content while maintaining a crystalline silica content below 1%.

4. New Stone Looks
While white marble-look styles tend to dominate in kitchen countertops, many manufacturers are branching out into other stone looks to offer homeowners more options. Sensa by Cosentino debuted its new Vancouver style, shown here on the countertops and backsplash. It’s a stone surface enhanced with a stain-resistant coating. Vancouver is part of 13 new Sensa stones launching this year.

While many people have probably heard of Brazilian Taj Mahal quartzite in recent years, many manufacturers are looking to the location of the actual Taj Mahal in India for inspiration in new stone-look designs. Laminam launched its new Taj Mahal porcelain slab style shown here. It’s inspired by rich, warm Indian marble.
Meanwhile, Caesarstone launched the Wild Taj style for its new ICON collection. The marble-look surface in sandy gold with warm brown is seen here.

6. Backlit Designs
One of the most buzzworthy surface trends at KBIS — backlit designs — is still in the early stages. With materials becoming thinner and thinner to accommodate versatile cladding applications, many designers are seeing potential to backlight slabs to stunning effect. Typically, these are custom designs created by a designer, contractor or both, who determine the right slab thickness and style and work to install LED lights behind the slab to get the desired glow. Brands often make recommendations as to which lighting setups work best, such as using Omnify LED light sheets at a lighting temperature of 6500K. Certain slab styles are a better fit for illuminating, such as lighter colors with crystal-like details.
Cambria showcased the new Brighton style at its KBIS booth, shown here, highlighting (literally) how it can be backlit to create a luminescent kitchen island or fireplace surround. One Cambria rep said a home professional had stopped by the booth to inquire about using backlit slabs for the walls of a shower and having that be the only lighting.

A peculiar thing is happening with countertops. They’re showing up on floors, walls, ceilings, range hoods, fireplaces, you name it. That’s because many of the durable engineered surfaces commonly used for countertops are now being made thin enough to mount elsewhere. You’ll find many examples throughout this article. Here, Caesarstone’s new creamy white and seaweed green Ocean Sage style is used in a kitchen for the countertops, backsplash and island cladding.
