I live in northern Colorado, and had a young clematis that lost every flower bud to deer until I finally gave up on it. (I planted a new one inside a fenced yard -- the deer can't get at it, but it's been eaten by a variety of bugs.... Maybe clematis and I just don't get along.)

minperkins, deer resistance is almost subjective in its reliability. While people in one community may have great success with certain deer resistant plants, those in the next community may find the same plants no help at all. There may be differences in species preference, i.e. white tail versus mule deer. The number of deer in one area, or environmental factors such as drought may drive deer to eat less palatable plants. Don't give up on your clematis, though. It might just be there are more bugs that like clematis this year. Next year will be different one way or another, and it often takes several years for a plant to establish.

I live in New Jersey, and deer eat all the buds on my clematis and just ate the buds on my new wisteria. Didn't eat the foliage, though - so hopefully once the plants get tall enough...
