6 Top Tile Trends to Inspire You in 2022
See the latest tile colors, shapes and patterns that stood out at the recent International Surface Event trade show
Serenity and a connection to nature continue to be themes in tile design this season, an apparent response to two years of spending so much time indoors. The International Surface Event 2022 revealed new patterns, colors, shapes and sizes of tile that reflect the need for authenticity, fresh colors and textures. Neutrals and subdued tones dominated the displays, but designers also offered many hints of glamour in their new collections.
“Because people aren’t traveling as much as they used to, they don’t have that sense of luxury and extravagance you get in a hotel, so they want a little bit of that for themselves,” says Kathy Greene of Emser Tile. Here are some highlights of the trade show for the tile, stone and floor coverings industries, held Feb. 1-3 in Las Vegas. The new collections will be rolling out throughout 2022.

2. Playing With Pattern
Patterned tiles are as popular as ever, and this year’s entries are even more varied. Some are new takes on recent years’ designs, with floral and geometric patterns having a slight edge over the popular encaustic patterns. The bathroom wall here displays Daltile’s new Stagecraft picket tiles, shown in the Galaxy solid color alongside a variety of patterns. The collection includes 3-by-12-inch rectangular and picket tiles.

3. Mixing It Up

In the world of shaped tiles, hexagons, pickets and other geometric lines still dominate, but the event also featured shapes that include leaves, waves and Art Deco-inspired curves. Shown here is the Triangle shape from Daltile’s new Starcastle collection.

Honey, I shrunk the hexagons. Hex shapes take a hint from penny round mosaics in Daltile’s Starcastle mini hexagon, shown here in the Comet color.
Not to be outdone by their angular cousins, flowery shapes are also popular — seen here is Arizona Tile’s CS-2 Flower tile. The CS-Completa collection of marble tiles gets an upgrade this season with several new patterns: Flower, Feather, Penny Round, Ribbon, Oval, Rhomboid and Ellipse.
Arizona Tile’s new Geo-2 series offers a fresh take on shapes by forming geometric designs with tiny hexagons made from recycled glass. This is Harmonie Outro.

5. Luxe and Elegant
Indulging in a bit of luxury has been appealing to many during these pared-back times. Timeless elegance along with a new take on opulence are seen in the 3-by-12-inch tiles in Emser’s new Luxo line, shown here in black. The collection comes in four glimmery colors.

Nothing says luxury like marble, except maybe a spot-on porcelain imitation like Emser’s new Serendra tile, in polished or matte finish. Mila, available in three sizes and colors, is shown here in a polished finish.
Arizona Tile’s new Calacatta Umber 8-by-8-inch hexagons add a bit of glam to a floor. The collection also includes Penny Round, Herringbone, Fan, Scala and 2-by-2-inch hexagons, along with 3D stacked tile.

6. Biophilic Colors Plus Blush
The popularity of blue and green in the design world cannot be denied, and tiles are no exception to the trend. Tan, cream and other neutral colors of nature are also prominent. But perhaps one of the most popular (subdued) bursts of color on the scene is pinkish blush, which is being seen in a variety of tiles. Here’s an example from American Olean’s new Playscapes collection in the Peony color and Arabesque shape.

On-trend earthy colors and shapes were on display at the booth from Surface Art at the tile show.
The subdued earth tones in Emser’s new Hanami line are inspired by Japan. Hanami, Japanese for “flower viewing,” describes the tradition of the cherry blossom festival. The tile’s glossy modern take on a basket weave pattern fits nicely into Scandinavian design, Greene says.
Here’s American Olean’s Arabesque tile from its new Playscapes collection, in Midnight Blue.
Emser displayed the new Rosa color in its existing Passion series. The pink corresponds to people’s desire for more color, Greene says. “It does give you a pop of color but it’s not in your face. It’s kind of soft.”
An identical grout color used with Rosa is particularly attractive, Greene says. In 2021, Emser came out with five custom grout colors that provide a nice alternative to white, she notes.

And here’s the Marazzi Artistic Reflections hexagon in Wave. The glazed ceramic tiles in the new collection have an undulating surface similar to a zellige tile. There are four neutral colors and four jewel tones in a glossy finish. Elongated tiles measure 2 by 10 inches and 2 by 20 inches.
This is Marazzi’s 2-by-10-inch tile from Artistic Reflections in Twilight.
Another zellige-style tile is the rectangular Marazzi Rice wall tile in Blu, available in 2 by 6 inches and 3 by 8 inches.

One of the main themes seen in the colors and shapes of tiles at the show was the quest for authenticity and living with the feeling of nature inside the home. The trend is defined by subtle neutrals and serene hues in porcelain and ceramic tiles that look lifelike as well as handmade, whether imitating wood grain, rustic stone or pitted concrete.
Seen on the wall here is Emser Tile’s new faux wood Heirloom tile, in Larch. “Heirloom is a glazed porcelain but has a natural wood look to it and has a little bit of texture,” Greene says. “People have walked up to it [at the show] thinking it’s real wood.” Available in three colors ranging from cool to warm, the tile measures 8 by 35 inches.
