2. Timeless Touches
Designers: Elizabeth Mathieson and Tuba Qerimi of M House Development
Location: Orland Park, Illinois
Size: 234 square feet (22 square meters); 13 by 18 feet
Homeowners’ request. “This project is a new-construction home,” designer Tuba Qerimi says. “We wanted to create a space featuring timeless elements and finishes, leaning toward a traditional aesthetic with a focus on functionality, creating a space that feels both luxurious and practical.”
Shower features. “This bathroom features a shower-bath concept where we combined a freestanding tub and shower in one unit,” Qerimi says. “While designing this shower, we wanted to be very mindful of different textures and finishes. The walls are adorned with a textured zellige tile and built-in shelves for storage, along with a floating Macchia Vecchia marble bench that coordinates to the marble that was used for the shower curb and countertops.”
Other special features. “Marble and limestone check pattern flooring was also a big design component, completing the sophisticated look of the space while adding another layer of detail to the overall design,” Qerimi says.
Designer tip. “Combine different textures and materials to create a space that is visually beautiful yet functional,” Qerimi says. “Mixing modern and traditional elements together creates a timeless design.”
Shower tile: Thin Bejmat zellige in Natural White, Riad Tile; flooring: Suave tumbled marble in Lynx and limestone in Pantera, 12 by 12 inches, AlysEdwards

3. Warm Modern
Designer: Samantha Bailey of The Design Shop
Location: Frisco, Texas
Size: 162 square feet (15 square meters); 9 feet, 6 inches by 17 feet
Homeowners’ request. “This bathroom was new construction,” designer Samantha Bailey says. “The homeowner required his-and-her vanities and a wet room with a warm, modern, multitextural and design-forward look.”
Shower features. “The shower and tub are both within the same wet room,” Bailey says. “The shower surround has two materials. The lower portion is a marble slab with a trim rail. Above that is zellige tile. The flooring is marble mosaic tile. The freestanding tub is acrylic. Topping it off are Brizo plumbing fixtures in a Luxe Gold finish.”
Other special features. Marmorino plaster walls. Custom white oak vanities with reeded details and 4-inch mitered Altissimo marble countertops. Sealed concrete floors.
Designer tip. “The marmorino plaster walls add such warmth and depth to the room, which would have otherwise had white walls,” Bailey says.

4. Big and Bold
Designer: Bonnie Bagley Catlin of Signature Designs
Location: Newport Coast, California
Size: 335 square feet (31 square meters), including a closet
Homeowners’ request. “The client knew they wanted to remodel their space but didn’t know how to go about it,” designer Bonnie Bagley Catlin says. “Their request was to have more natural light, improve the size of the shower and increase their storage space at the vanity, all while making it as highly functional as possible.”
Shower features. “The shower is 11 feet long,” Catlin says. “That allows each person to have their own showering space. That required a dual entrance and dual plumbing fixtures. The shower and tub accent wall is created out of porcelain slabs and accented with a natural stone marble detailing around the new windows. The plumbing fixtures are a graphite finish.” The flooring is travertine.

5. Light and Airy
Architect: John Hathaway of Vanguard Studio
Location: Round Mountain, Texas
Homeowners’ request. “The homeowners wanted a bathroom that offered privacy while embracing expansive views of the surrounding landscape,” architect John Hathaway says. “They envisioned a serene, open space that would seamlessly connect to the backyard, supporting their entertainment goals, without guests having a direct line of sight into the bathroom. The goal was to create a tranquil retreat that also felt part of the larger outdoor environment.”
Shower features. “The shower features custom-designed tiles in a neutral palette, with a combination of polished marble and large-format ceramic tiles,” Hathaway says. “A rain-style shower head and recessed lighting enhance the luxurious feel, while discreet storage keeps the space tidy and uncluttered.”
Other special features. “A large glass wall captures sweeping views of the garden and hills,” Hathaway says. “To maintain privacy, frosted privacy film covers the lower portion of the glass, allowing natural light and views without compromising seclusion. A freestanding tub is positioned in front of the shower glass, creating a seamless, integrated feel. The warm tongue-and-groove ceiling and blue-toned vanity wall tile evoke the calming flow of water, contributing to the tranquil atmosphere.”
Designer tip. “For spaces with expansive glass, consider using privacy film or tall planters to maintain a connection to nature while ensuring privacy,” Hathaway says. “It’s a simple and effective way to balance both. Finding the right balance between privacy and natural light was a challenge, but after testing various opacity levels of the privacy film and customizing it to the client’s preferred height, we achieved the ideal solution that allowed light to fill the space without sacrificing privacy.”

6. Double Vision
Designers: Alena Zoghi and Giannina Battaglia of Eskan Developers
Location: Irvine, California
Size: 210 square feet (20 square meters)
Homeowners’ request. Add style to a basic newly purchased home. “The homeowners gravitated toward elegant and clean aesthetics infused with modern touches,” designer Alena Zoghi says. “Their other request was to use materials that would be easy to clean and maintain.”
Shower features. “Given the spaciousness of the shower, we opted for a double shower head system with two separate handheld shower heads and two separate controllers to enhance functionality,” Zoghi says. “This design not only offers each client their own space but also allows for simultaneous use, making it ideal for busy mornings. The shower is finished with a porcelain tile that elegantly replicates the look of marble without the maintenance of real marble.”
Other special features. “The bathroom design includes a reeded vanity in the color Fine Grain (Dunn-Edwards) with a white quartz countertop,” Zoghi says. “Two elongated antique brass sconces with a natural stone shade are placed alongside both polished nickel mirrors. The space also features a 72-inch bathtub, which is highlighted by a drum-shaped chandelier made from natural abaca, giving it a warm and inviting feel.”
Designer tip. “Extra-large showers in the same large tile can start looking boring,” Zoghi says. “We suggest using the same tile in various sizes within the shower and arranging them in different patterns to achieve a seamless yet interesting look. We used Themar Venato Gold 24-by-24-inch tile by Arizona Tile on the shower walls below the shampoo ledge. Above the shampoo ledge we used 3-by-12-inch subway tile from the same collection in the herringbone pattern. The possibilities for creatively stacking tiles are endless.”

7. Steam and Stone
Designers: Cindy Aplanalp Ruzicka and Amber Reddoch of Chairma Design Group and Lauren O’Connor of Sanctuary
Location: Newport Coast, California
Size: 265 square feet (25 square meters)
Homeowners’ request. “This remodel was inspired by the clients’ desire to create a welcoming and elegant space in their newly purchased secondary home where they could spend quality time with their out-of-state adult children and grandchildren,” designer Amber Reddoch says. “They envisioned a home that reflected their refined yet understated aesthetic while embodying the comfort and sophistication of the luxury hotels they enjoy during their travels. The result is a thoughtfully designed space that balances warmth, style and functionality, making it perfect for both family gatherings and quiet retreats.”
Shower features. “A steam shower provides a spa-like shower experience,” Reddoch says. “The quartzite slabs are fabricated to look like block paneling and add a touch of classicism. A floating shower bench was expanded and repositioned to be more functional and aesthetically pleasing. An existing skylight is utilized to bathe the shower in natural light.”
Other special features. “The original bathroom had a large Jacuzzi tub surrounded by columns,” Reddoch says. “We removed the columns and the bulky tub in favor of a freestanding tub to open up the space. The tub is surrounded by walls paneled in slab with a beautiful decorative tile and mirror-mounted sconces. The tub takes advantage of the incredible view of the Pacific Ocean from their bathroom. Natural quartzite counters and marble floor tile were used to lighten the bathroom and add timeless elegance.”

Designer: Bridgette Grant of Etch Design Group
Location: Austin, Texas
Homeowners’ request. “The clients requested that the space feel very zen, like a retreat at the spa,” designer Bridgette Grant says.
Shower features. “We used Kohler‘s Anthem digital technology,” Grant says. “It’s a really cool feature that allows for a clean look with full function and control but no wall clutter. You can program it for several users, various settings and you can control it from the wall or even your phone. We applied a beautiful custom plaster color to the walls and wrapped the tub in a marble-look porcelain. The cut-pebble stone floor also lended itself well to the zen vibe. My goal was to keep the space understated yet luxurious. While the intention is for the primary bath to be a showstopper, I also wanted the focus to be the massive wall of glass that overlooks the primary suite courtyard and floods the space with natural light.”
Grant uses Houzz Pro software to manage her design projects. “Proposals, invoices, purchase orders, product tracking, time billing, vendors, etc.,” she says.
Designer tip. “The oversized tub deck and floating shelves above make it feel like the space is furnished,” Grant says. “The shelves provide storage and the deck acts as a bench as well as storage. It maintains the minimalist aesthetic but not at the expense of functionality.”
