From sculptural wood to geometric framing, lighting designers are elevating structure into a defining feature

The annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) returned to New York City’s Javits Center May 17-19, showcasing the latest in contemporary design. Across the fair, lighting designers drew attention to the very elements that traditionally fade into the background, emphasizing chains, stems, frames and even the way fixtures are suspended. Here are seven trends that stood out.

1. Stacked Forms

Repetitive shapes emerged as a common theme across this year’s lighting introductions. Stacked discs, spheres and shades added a sense of rhythm and dimensionality, often transforming simple forms into impactful compositions.

Taiwan-Lantern introduced its Floor Lantern, joining two handmade Tuolo shades separated by wood or lacquered discs and a ring of porcelain beads. The doubled lantern forms create a fuller silhouette, giving the handcrafted shades twice the opportunity to make an impression.

Inspired by the work of sculptor Barbara Hepworth, the Hepworth sconce by Brooklyn ceramist Jen Dwyer of Studio J.E.D. combines three hand-thrown stoneware forms. Together, they reference cairns, architectural columns and naturally balanced stones.

Framed in thin glass, A-N-D’s Pace pendant lights can be suspended individually or stacked vertically. The modular form allows designers to extend the fixture through repetition, creating installations that range from a simple pendant to a dramatic multitiered composition.

2. Sculptural Wood

Wood appeared repeatedly throughout this year’s lighting debuts. Sculptural and often substantial in scale, the material frequently became the focal point, rivaling the glow it was designed to produce. While its density and opacity may make wood a surprising choice for lighting, many designers used light to accentuate the material itself, highlighting its grain, texture and carved forms.

Reminiscent of a turbine, Misewell’s Fin table lamp evokes a sense of movement despite its stationary form. Crafted from half discs of oak with a ceramic base, the piece draws attention from all angles.

Made from solid hardwood, Nörska’s Håll Linear pendant uses two carved, concave forms with wavelike undulations to showcase the wood itself. As the fixture is illuminated, the wood grain and natural tonal variation become more pronounced.

While not made from wood, Tala’s new Root collection draws inspiration from the branching architecture of tree roots. Forged from solid brass, the chandeliers, which are available in eight configurations, feature textured joints and spreading arms that echo the forms of the underground structures.

3. Angled Drops

Not every pendant at this year’s ICFF hung perfectly straight. A number appeared to lean, tilt or balance in space. The unexpected positioning made the fixtures more visually engaging and encouraged a closer look.

With its perforated metal shade, Pablo Designs’ Bola Bell pendant adjusts from a vertical position to a range of angled orientations. The movement reinforces the fixture’s flexibility while giving users greater control over where light is directed.

Inspired by the smooth, rounded forms of stones, A-N-D’s Pebble pendant connects a large and small blown-glass element at a central point. Suspended from a thin wire, the fixture appears delicately angled, as if balancing in space.

4. Exaggerated Textures

Whether 3D-printed, carved or woven, highly tactile surfaces appeared throughout this year’s show. The emphasis on texture added warmth and visual depth to many of the introductions, giving even minimalist forms greater depth and presence.

Deep ridges define Numia’s Nua lamp. Made from 3D-printed bioplastic, the design pairs pronounced linear texture with a simple globe bulb, allowing the exaggerated surface treatment to take center stage.

MIOS’ Uni lamp showcases the possibilities of 3D-printed clay through a woven ceramic form. Topped with a glass dome, each piece is finished by hand, lending a sense of craftsmanship to the highly textured lamp.

5. Chain Emphasis

Chains are hardly new in lighting design, long serving as a practical means of suspending chandeliers and pendants. At this year’s ICFF, however, they moved beyond a purely functional role, becoming a defining visual element in many new introductions.

Kansas City-based Castilleja debuted a lighting collection so new it has yet to be named. Featuring handblown glass shades in a variety of opacities, the fixtures are cinched at the top or center and accented by historically inspired metalwork. Ornate detailing and substantial scale elevate the chain from a supporting element to a focal point.

Marx Et Al’s Corot chandelier combines a suspended-bowl silhouette with faceted brass construction and Brutalist-inspired chain-link detailing. The weighty metalwork reinforces the fixture’s industrial character while contrasting with the uniquely patinated surface of the brass.

6. Thin Stems

As slim, wall-mounted bedside sconces continue to gain popularity, it was perhaps inevitable that the look would migrate to floor lamps. The evolution reflects a growing preference for lighting that delivers focused illumination with a minimal footprint, at a time when many larger fixtures are functioning as much as sculptural objects as sources of light.

Ligne Roset’s Niji reading lamp reimagines the slim bedside sconce as a freestanding fixture for living spaces. A dramatic arch and bold red finish give the design an outsize presence despite its slender proportions.

While rechargeable lights continue to grow in both efficiency and popularity, they have largely been limited to table lamps and lanterns. Gantri addressed that at this year’s show with Eave, a wireless floor lantern. A substantial base and broad shade are contrasted by a thin stem that passes through and extends above the shade. The elongated line draws the eye upward, making the stem as much a feature of the design as the light itself. It also serves as the fixture’s handle, allowing it to be easily carried from space to space.

Designed by Yves Lecointre for French lighting company Hisle, the PICO lamp pairs a folded leather shade with a slender metal stem and pared-back base. The delicate support keeps attention on the leatherwork and saddle-stitched detailing.

7. Square Framing

Rectilinear framing appeared across a number of lighting introductions, bringing a sense of structure to otherwise fluid designs. The geometry often served as a backdrop for textured glass and soft shades.

SIN launched FIELD, a lighting collection built around a square ceramic backplate and folded geometric shades. Available in multiple material, finish and hardware combinations, the system allows designers to customize both the appearance of the fixture and the quality of light it emits while maintaining a consistent geometric framework.

Cuff Studio’s Brut pendant pairs a diminutive brass frame with asymmetrical panels of matte, mouth-blown glass. While the Brutalist-inspired fixture is defined by clean geometric lines, an angled corner disrupts the otherwise rectilinear silhouette. The contrast between the sleek geometry and textured glass creates a sense of tension.
