7 Tips for a Sensational Yellow Bathroom
Counter the late-winter blahs with a blast of sunny yellow in the bathroom
Ready to move beyond winter white yet? Perk up your senses with an injection of yellow hues in your home. Bathrooms are excellent spaces for this energetic color, since unlike a bedroom or living room, it’s not a space we tend to spend long periods of time in. Being greeted first thing in the morning by a generous dose of yellow as you step into the bathroom can be just the thing to help jump-start the day.
1. Use bold yellows wisely. If you opt for a saturated yellow, consider using it on just one or two walls. If your bathroom is blessed with ample natural light, however, feel free to increase the amount of vibrant color. Large or plentiful windows can help break up the expanse of color, and the amount of light they allow in will soften the impact of an especially zesty yellow.
2. Be generous with soft yellows. Toned-down yellows, such as the one used here, work well with all design styles and can be used on all walls. Yellows with slight green undertones have a fresh and crisp vibe — think spring — whereas soft yellows that veer more toward orange exude a warm and golden glow.
3. Add personality. I’m a big fan of clean-lined minimalist spaces, especially when they include a little dash of big color. This is a great way to personalize a space that otherwise has minimal ornamentation.
4. Call attention to interesting details. Use color as a tool to either accentuate or downplay areas or features in a room. To make something blend in, camouflage it by painting it to match its surroundings. For items or details you want to play up or call attention to, a coat of highlighter yellow will do the job brilliantly.
5. Use it in unexpected ways. Bold yellow walls aren’t for everyone. If you love the color but can’t fathom staring at an entire wall or walls of it, think about using it in smaller, perhaps even somewhat hidden, ways. I bet these homeowners get a nice little pick-me-up whenever they open these drawers and see the delightful dash of pure yellow within.
6. Coordinate with surface materials. Lighter woods often have a slight yellow cast. Play up this warm glow by teaming it with shades of soft yellow. This warm and cozy color and material palette is a great choice for those residing in regions with a cold climate.
7. Balance out an otherwise cool palette. Gray and white are continuing their run of popularity in the new year, and while they can hold their own as go-to neutrals, they can sometimes come across as too cool or stark. An easy way to warm things up is to add a bit of soft golden yellow. Paint is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to quickly change the look and feel of a room.
